Wow. You know, I'd have to scroll back through this list to even remember what my favorite raps of the year used to be! This has been a hell of a year for hip hop. where did Indigoism run off to? That's still a top 10'er for me for sure. I seem to remember you being pretty into it. Glad to see Tree in your list. Sunday School II has been one of my picks since the first time I heard it. I'm going to have to let Doris set in, and pit Yeezus and 12 Reasons against each other once more before I can assemble a proper updated list. However, I know Magna Carta Holy Grail is going to be on there, if a little lower than I'd expected. |

Ok, what the fuck was I talking about? That Ghostface was the best album of the year maybe hip hop and even otherwise, his best since Fishscale (and these beatz are even better). So Ghostface > Sunday School II > Doris > Yeezus.. etc

Thank you. When I read your first post I almost shat m'self. Ghostface may very well outrank Yeezus for me as well, and it's definitely one of the best albums of the year, irrespective of genre. |

i do find Magna Carta entertaining as hell, just like every other "mediocre" Jay album. but i can't say that it's something which will be worth remembering in 2-3 years, you know? i've also been digging the new Gucci "World War III" trilogy, as well as some other stuff. seriously i think i could make a top 25 by the end this year. oh and i'm so excited about Schoolboy Q's upcoming album. i think that'll end up as my album of the year. |

Alright, seriously. After just listening again, how can anything this year even touch that new Ghostface? Those are some SICK A$$ beats. Kendrick Lamar can have tupac fantasies on his verses and Kanye and have 'no sex in the champagne room' delusions but Ghostface closed the lid on 2013, period. I can't believe I didn't notice this as much months ago when it came out, it slipped under the radar for me until recently. Shit This mutha fucka put it down. Everything else is just playing around, tap dancing towards the real, but Tony Starks came through and brought The Real.

Can you shoot me a message with a list of the hip hop you've purchased from 2013? I want to compare notes, and I don't think you've revealed everything here in the cafe. Surprisingly, the 2013 Slum Village album is pretty satisfying. Nothing new, nothing revelatory, but I'm sorry I ignored it just because it's not some new flashy "it" project by one of rap's revolving door of key players. Btw: where the fuck is Lil B? I never hear anyone hyping him anymore, and I think Earl or Typer even throws a diss his way on Doris. How many of these guys ARE going to be remembered? I'm not sure any of them will, if B is already "where are they now" insult worthy. |

I fully agree, and I think you're right that 12 reasons is the most high quality hip hop release of the year. However, it doesn't hit me emotionally like Yeezus does at its darkest moments, and despite a few lyrical foibles, I think Kanye remains the biggest visionary in the genre. So, Yeezus might beat out ol' Ghostface on my list, which is almost heresy for someone who worships Wu the way I do, but you're totally right that nothing else (especially some new OFWGKTA novelty that most of us will probably roll our eyes at in a year... No offense; Doris kills... But so did wolf for a few days) can touch 12 Reasons, an album that will most definitely be remembered by an artist who is already a legend among legends. |

well Lil B is more of a satirican than a serious artist, enough people still download his mixtapes, and he's an independent artist.

I prefer volume II, and have from the get go, but I haven't listened to volume I since II came out.
This album really grabbed me by the balls. I'm excited that it's become one of the consistent favorites around here. |

yeah a lot of dudes tend to love that album. Not me so much. I know I'll catch hell for this, but my least fav part of Illmatic is AZ on "Life's A Bitch." Weird right?
