Although he is very versatile.

In Gavin & Stacy (can a TV show be a twat?) he does his funny robot dance and shouts GAVLAR! one minute, and when a serious moment is called for he STOPS doing his robot dance and doesn't shout GAVLAR!

Totally. Some shows I'm sure are tailored to an audience made almost exclusively of twats. I wouldn't be surprised if Gavin and Stacey's creators routinely reminded James that his lines and character were intended to make him look and sound like a twat.
