I tried to think about this and then formulate an opinion and finally an answer to post. But it was too hard.

I think this is why I'm such a huge Sonic Youth fan. They're always just a bit older than me.

It seemed really important to spend my 40th birthday like this:

which of course has nothing to do with "youth culture", but was still lots of fun, and pretty far from a "normal" 40th birthday. But then, by day, I now own a home, have a pregnant wife, and a really good job doing something socially responsible. I guess I've left the "self-destruction is cool" side of my youth pretty far behind, but good riddance. When I saw Sonic Youth in Portland this summer I think I was one of about two or three people over 21 on the floor, because drinking was allowed upstairs in the balcony. The people up there looked really tired and bored, while the kids seemed to be having a great time.

Bloc Party can hardly be the "old guard of indie rock" as they aren't even indie rock in the old school, as in independent, sense! They're just a slighty better than average '80s revival band.

Husker Du records are sincere. Sting records are earnest.

None of the two are any use if taken in excessive doses. But thanks for reminding.

At my age I can't afford to lose the ten minutes it took me to read through this tedious thread.

I don't really know that I have much to say in reference to this thread (of which I have only read half). I may be 40, and I may make the occasional reference to that, but I don't actually identify myself as a 40 year old.

I occasionally realise how old I am when I'm about to start talking about something about which I realise that, because of their age, many of the people to whom I'm talking will know nothing (e.g. the "What was your reaction to hearing that Elvis had died" thread that I didn't start after all), but on the whole the generation gap passes me by.

When I come across people who are much younger than me who I think are idiots, I put it down to their youth for about three seconds, and then realise that they'll probably still be idiots when they're 30, 50, or 70, it's just the way they are.

The ever beckoning finger of death? Oh, fuck that, my best friend died of cancer when we were both 36, you never know when death is going to stick out a leg for you to trip over.

The first thing that defines any Generation is their perception of other Generations.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what “it” was. Now, what I’m with isn’t it, and what’s “it” seems weird and scary to me.
It'll happen to you.

This hasn't really happened to me. Instead what's "it" seems done and redone. Seriously, does anyone on this planet find Bloc Party scary? Joy Division and Gang of Four were rather scary in their day. Even the most "shocking" extreme noise stuff today with all it's torture porn and neo-fascism just seems like a rehash of Boyd Rice, who's gotten to seem pretty boring himself over time.
