Never found Bahuaus disturbing, even as a kid. I'll rep anyone who can remember the name of the journalist who interviewed the band on stage and caused them to walk out.

Saying this quietly because I don't want a reputation. I quite like their first record [downloaded illegally, I might add] because of the irony of kids singing, quite innocently, utter horrific songs. I don't even think they're racists proper at that point, they're just entirely happy, it seems, to sing these songs. Scary for different reasons, yes.

Jeck is the master of woozy soundscapes. I thoroughly hate the soundscapes word, but I think he's very good. I've mentioned Philip Randall and Pauline Malign before, they are one of the few noise artistes who go far too far with the 'shock' factor but still manage to disturb somewhat. Sainkho Namchylak is another one who's capable of making really unpleasant, genuinely so, sounds, but is also frequently pretty benign (no bad thing).

Linky one Linky 2 I might add that the second link is by no means anything like the more unpleasant work she can do. Edit: Oh, she started making the horrible sounds about 2:50. Good for her.

Nope. Pick a name and I'll upload some of their stuff for ya. Remember, I'm considerably older than most people on this board, and most of the bands that freaked me out have long since ceased to exist. I was lucky enough to get to see a few of these 'scary bands' at the height of their powers. I was nearly killed by a huge chain being wielded by Graeme Revell at an SPK gig - it went through my hair, missed my skull by about an inch. I used to go and watch PTV play regularly, around the time they were being accused of satanism and baby murdering by the British press. Laibach at the Zap Club in Brighton was scary - the band came on stage wearing antlers and jackboots and their support band was an old man chopping a log with a big fuck off axe. Swans at the Zap was pretty intense too - just the sheer volume! Bauhaus were NOT scary!

Swans is the obvious choice if youve ever heard them, Your Property is the one which is especially horriffic to my ears.
Unknown Pleasures is a very unsettling album and its got nothing to do with the fact he killed himself. I remember hearing it for the first time when i was 16 or so and thinking that every piece of music made since was redundant and pointless. Ive always seen Black Sabbath as having more in common with Pink Floyd, Can, and that sort of experimental end of 60s music than Metallica or Iron Maiden, i think its just the feel of their sound. As such they still have a definitively otherwordly feel about their music to me. |

I have to say, it doesn't come across on record, but Atari Teenage Riot had the most brilliantly confusing and violent live show I've ever seen. Still the loudest band I can think of.
