The moon landings were certainly not faked. It's an asinine argument that they were staged and I refuse to argue about it any further.

But I do agree with your more general observation about the timing. Kubrick was tapped into the zeitgeist of the early space age, thus his partnership with Clarke and the movie.

As far as 2001 being redundant, that's far from the case. NASA engineers were specifically asked what from that movie they would like budget money for, and the design of the U.S. Space Shuttle is based on one of the spacecraft depicted towards the beginning of the outer space part of the film. There are several other instances in which 2001 depicts technological advances that were then purely in the realm of science fiction that are now science fact.

The Curse of Frankenstein (1957).

Hammer's first horror fim really did revolutionise the genre. By using colour it abandoned the shadowplay of the earlier German and Universal gothics. Suddenly blood became a key factor in the horror aesthetic. In b&w blood would just be another shade of grey, in colour it could be presented in vivid red. An absolutely crucial film in the development of the way the horror movie would look in the future.

Bay of Blood's only real claim to fame is that its plot was nicked for Friday the 13th, and is, if this is possible, even worse than the 'remake'.

Bay of Blood was one of the original slasher films. And it also has an artful direction that definitely inspired a lot of Italian horror, including a lot of Argento's better known works.


A lot of Bava films, even though I'm not a big fan, were ahead of their time. Black Sunday, Black Sabbath, Blood and Black Lace (the original giallo), etc.

Humorous slant there, but just think...per this topic, Kubrick and Hitchcock are probably the two most ground-breaking directors in the history of cinema. That is, if were concentrating on the subject matter and themes of movies moreso than special effects...if we're primarily discussing fx, then no, there are many others and it all begins with King Kong.
