Well! Kanye appears to be defending XXXtentación for no earthly reason and to nobody’s benefit and possibly his own severe detriment, by making his could-have-been-innocuous guest verse into some kind of statement about how X was not “innocent until proven guilty” (he was though) and asking why nobody every “blames the plaintiff” (but they do, and it’s like a social disease).

I’m about ready to stop paying attention to Kanye altogether.
If I stop now, maybe my love for his music from 2004 to halfway through 2018 will remain in tact.

God fucking dammit.

*Listens to Kendrick and “This is America” and “Some Rap Songs” to remind self that world is not over for like the 200th time this year*

Did you hear "Fetti"? Gibbs and Currensy duo tape, fully produced by the immensly talented Alchemist.

I'm becoming one of those people who miss the old days. Welp.

Oh come on.

That’s not Kendrick. That’s a paycheck.

That thing is so basic it doesn’t even count as a Kendrick record.

The fact that it got a bunch of Granmy nominations is proof nobody knows what the fuck they’re doing and, quite frankly, it’s insulting to Kendrick’s actual work. You know the stuff that isn’t a commercial?

Not bad not good. Vanilla, like Carters.

I’m sure Kendrick sees it as a necessary detour to keep fans invested.

No. And I miss older days than you remember, but I’m still happy with JPEGMafia, Young Fathers, Earl, KSG, Noname and all the other great hip-hip (adjacent) albums that dropped this year.

Old days are fine. But now is interesting.

Just wish Drake would fucking go away.

Still had more Kendrick than anything else you can find this year. Plus I enjoyed the guest spots from Jorja, Vince, Paak, SOB X RBE, etc. Yeah it had that commercial appeal, but not in an off putting way in my opinion.

Or just don’t say the N-word.

I have this thing where I don’t even say it when I’m singing along. I might mouth it, but I don’t say it.

Had Kendrick called me up on stage, I would have been ready

Just sucks all the fun out if I can't sing along. Like I know the word, they know the word. I'm from Detroit y'know? There's a HUGE black culture/cultural influence around here. I've always just taken the word as meaning 'dude'. Context is everything, I used to argue. Then I opened my eyes a little more, and just felt uncomfortable w/ the genre as a whole. Not like every song has that word, but a lot of my favorites do. I used to stan hard for dudes like Esham, Three Six, Danny Brown, Big Sean, Too Short, Gucci, and SpaceGhostPurrp.

It's alright. I still got my Mercyful Fate and Dino jr albums to obsess over.

No offense, but I’d recommend resisting the impulse to distance yourself from genres/cultures because you’re worried about the differences between that culture and yours.

I really don’t mean that in a negative way. I have know a lot of folks who have thrown their hands up and said “FINE! I’m done!” and I’ve seen it lead to resentment and weird aggression toward other cultures. Not saying that will happen, but I’ve seen it. White people get really fussy when they feel like they can’t be 100% part of a thing, but sometimes you can’t.

My actual rule is that I have just saturated myself with so much of that music that I instinctively know when I can and cannot say the word. I *might* sing it by myself in the shower if I’m listening to “Hold my Liquor” or something, but in earshot of anyone else, I just bleep it out.

It’s not work. It’s instinct. And I still get to enjoy the music and watch Atlanta. And I’m not mad that I will never truly understand, but I’m down to learn and experience what I can. *shrug*

Lol, not distancing myself from the culture. I just don't feel comfortable singing that word, even alone in my car. If it's not cool in front of a black person, then it shouldn't be something I do by myself either.

It's like that scene in White Chicks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yTTuYe-G2BI

Guess I grew apart from hip-hop. I don't have any disdain for it in any sense, just not something which I feel represents me as an individual.

Fair enough. Sorry if I misunderstood.

Doesn’t represent me either, but I guess I like it too much.

I'm the opposite.. as time goes on, I find it more and more difficult to enjoy non hip hop, even bands I admired like Dinosaur Jr and the likes. Been listening to tons of Mobb Deep.

Honestly I just got used to say "Jigga" wherever there is an N word.
