The tagline for AB is *look closer*. It's about what's above and below the surface. But it ain't deep. It's as obvious as a narrative that is blatantly all surface. Maybe it'll force you to find beauty in the most random things, I guess. Maybe it was 1999's Crash. |

In a time... when too many filmmakers lack a style of their own, I'm surprised to say that Wes Anderson's visual style is boring to me now. I think. I could be wrong. |

I’m not sure what I think about American Beuaty. The scenes with Kevin Spacey having his mid life crisis, quitting his job and listening to rock music, etc, are brilliant, unpretentious fun; the scenes with that odd bloke talking about the poetic beauty of a shopping bag blowing the wind are embarrassing.
Anyway, I finally saw Hana-Bi. Disappointing. It's not as good, because it isn't as balanced, as Sonatine... it's too dull and morbid and at times borders on self parody (i.e., the cinematography tricks: every scene is either Takeshi staring at the camera in sunglasses trying to look expressionless, or a picture of a mountain which is captured right in the centre, so it looks parallel... meh). And I watched Naked again and it confirms my first impression that, without the character of Sebastian (a caricature yuppie) it would be my favourite film. |

Nicol Williamson is the reason to keep coming back to this one. Who's that hot chick next to him? Helen Mirren!!

Six years ago I was so moved by it. Six years later I enjoyed it more than I expected, but I didn't think it was great; just pretty good. The shopping bag video made me cry six years ago I must admit. Six years later I wasn't moved at all. Notice that music plays in this scene. Apparently the filmmaker didn't trust the image enough to move the audience on its own. There is something forced about the Wes Bentley/look closer scenes. The audience shouldn't be told something is beautiful. |

"the audience shouldn't be told something is beautiful."
90% of people have to have it pointed out for them.

Goddamn Amelie.
If one more person tries to tell me it's the best movie ever I'm going to stop watching movies altogether. Either that or get on here and complain about it.

I will be seeing this tonight...I expect to be simultaneously turned on and depressed.
I've liked a lot of Ang Lee's flicks going back to "the Wedding Banquet" and "Eat, Drink, Man, Woman". "Eat, Drink, Man, Woman" is like food porn... but then I love food movies like "The God of Cookery", "Tampopo", "The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and her Lover", "Big Night" and , many others. If you see "The God of Cookery" then you have seen my soul:
