Scanners is second tier Cronenberg for me, which puts it below Rabid, Shivers, Crimes of the Future and Videodrome, but above The Fly (debatably) and a long way above anything he's done in the last ten years. The Fly is my favorite... I just have a different taste in Cronenberg movies I guess (also, I REALLY like his recent work).

Well, holy shit. That pretty much floored me. I need to ruminate a bit before I know what I really think, but DAMN, at the very least it was somehow unlike anything else I've seen before. I highly recommend you see it, but there's no way I'm going to be able to describe now in a way that wouldn't belittle it.
