Just wanted to report my first visit to a smoke-free railway station. Got to the station yesterday morning, and all my children had to breath in was the smell of overpriced coffee and croissant.

A resounding success so far! No?

We have a sign on the door of our office now stating that it is illegal to smoke inside - not that anyone ever has in the five or so years that I've been working here. It's just occurred to me that all the tobacco companies will have to have those signs on the doors to their offices too. What a splendid piece of irony.

I admire people who don't smoke, but I have to say that some of them can be real fascists. Last Saturday I had to take shelter outside the toy shop Hamleys because it was pissing down with rain. Even though I was standing outside and the smoking ban wasn't coming into effect until the next day, one of their staff asked me if I could stop smoking because the smoke was, apparently, 'blowing towards the shop'. Fair enough, but I wouldn't be surprised if one of these days some pro-smoking activist is going to use one of these people as a human ashtray.

People who quit smoking and don't become anti-smoking zealots are admirable. The ones who start lecturing everyone else about what a terrible habit smoking is are nowt but a pain in the arse.

and glice, do you have an anti-smoking advertisement on brit telly with a couple (hetero!) on bed and the man just lighting a cig and a note, that it will take long time since he ll manage to make love again? ew to that one.

A friend alerted me to this bizarre clause in the smoking regulations.

6. Where the artistic integrity of a performance makes it appropriate for a person who is taking part in that performance to smoke, the part of the premises in which that person performs is not smoke-free in relation to that person during his performance.

Although I am a non-smoker, I think this law is draconian, just an excericse in further undermining people's civil rights, and would love to see musicians standing up to its stupidity by smoking on stage.

I remember seeing Acid Mothers Gong at the RFH a few years ago and Cotton Casino was smoking in what is a very non-smoking venue, probably to do with said 'artistic integrity'. I suspect that it'll only be a week or so before someone in some band sparks up onstage and there's a furore or some such.

I only smoke when im drunk. So this ban really pisses me off. I agree with smoking being banned in most places but Pubs and Clubs should be an exception. It breaks with the whole British dream. You go to the pub to drink, smoke, let your hair down. Not to be a health freak. If you wanna be healthy you are really in the wrong establishment. In a pub you should be able to drink, smoke and indeed as the gentleman above mentioned fart and scratch your ball hair to your heart's content.
