Well, no responsible medical organization (which is to say none working specifically on a "product" for Trump, Boris, Modi or any of these FUCKS to take credit for) will put out a half-assed vaccine that hasn't been properly tested, with the side effects clearly stated "right there on the label". If the first safe one works only 60% of the time and gives you strong headaches for a week, hell, give it to me ASAP, what the fuck is there to wait for.

Now, HUGE caveat: access to the vaccine is the next real problem. Right now just getting a damn test is difficult - imagine what it will be like to get something that will protect you against the mother(fucker) of all pandemics. The World Health Organization is under attack: will there be enough international coordination so there is enough of it and all countries can receive it? Will countries have to BUY IT, will YOU have to buy it at big pharma prices? Will your insurance cover it? Will the uninsured be completely fucked? (Immediate yes to that question.) Will countries outside the "developed" world depend on Bill Gates and NGOs to fly in and save their people?

When it comes to Covid-19 economics, the relevant question isn’t whether to keep a lockdown in place or reopen in full, Zachary Karabell writes in Politico Magazine. Rather, it’s how to modulate business activity with more nuanced measures as the virus comes back in waves—how to turn the economy on and off sustainably, rather than stopping it wholesale in ways that make restarting difficult.

A few proposals have surfaced. "In Europe, a group of researchers spread over nine countries modeled multiple scenarios for how to confront a future surge,” Karabell notes. “The most effective strategy, according to their models, would be to alternate 50-day strict lockdowns followed by 30 days of opening, followed by more lockdowns as need be"—a strategy that might "reduce the risk of social breakdown" by giving everyone some certainty and a periodic break.

A group in Tel Aviv suggests having people “work in two-week cycles of four-day workweeks, followed by 10 days of voluntary quarantine. Schools would follow a similar pattern,” Karabell writes. “The logic is that even if people contracted the disease in that two-week period, the subsequent 10-day quarantine would reduce the infection rate in the larger society to below 1, which would in turn prevent wide-scale outbreaks.” Former Mitt Romney health-policy adviser Avik Roy has advocated letting Covid-19’s age distribution guide us; his proposal includes reopening K-12 schools, lifting stay-at-home orders for all but the elderly, and prioritizing testing in nursing homes.

Regardless of whose plan is best, Karabell’s point is that this is the discussion to be having. As Roy wrote in an April Wall Street Journal op-ed (from which Karabell quotes), “Instead of thinking up creative ways to force people to stay home, we should think hard every day about how to bring more people back to work.”

Gov. Greg Abbott (R) announced on Thursday that Texas would pause its reopening while it struggles to contain a surge in novel coronavirus infections. Abbott issued executive order to suspend elective surgeries at hospitals in four counties to ensure there would be room for covid-19 patients.

In New York, coronavirus hospitalizations dipped just below 1,000 for the first time since March 18, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo (D) said.

Two states (Alabama and Nevada) have reported new single-day case highs, and four (Arizona, California, Florida and Nevada) reached seven-day rolling average highs. But it does not appear, according to early reported data, that the U.S. total would eclipse Wednesday’s record high of 38,173 cases.

A rush to reopen the nation’s economy without proper safety measures in place is behind this week’s spike in cases, Ashish Jha, director of the Harvard Global Health Institute, said Thursday on the “Today” show.

I look for Governor Abbott to shut down the State once again in the days following the 4th of July holiday weekend! If this indeed happens, I look for the start of school to be pushed back until after Labor Day.
