I think one of the large disparities between Europe (or my part of it anyway) is that Europe produces an awful lot of dance music, whereas, save for Detroit house, there's a lot less of a culture of dance music in America. I don't mean hip-hop, which is a dance music of sorts, but it's also has a lot more of a message rather than being purely about 'the dancing'. British people (such is my experience) are often found raving it up one night and seeing rock stuff the next, or even both in one evening.

Is this contentious? Someone American tell me I'm wrong.

Well punk rock is just a drop in the ocean if we talk music in general.This i could deny or you could deny but it remains a fact in history.Loads of really good music came and comes out of the USA/Canada etc etc but just because it has a ready-made trampoline(the media) it aint mean it is the only music being produced in the world or the most interesting.I'm personally more interested in indigeneous musics (american,european or non) than punk rock(which i was never really that fond of to start with) but it is all relative to your perception of sound,innit love?

I hate dancing. The closest I could allow myself to dancing would be slam-dancing...

Your Totally right Sonicl. I think its because 'North' America has such a culture of classification, everyone has to fit into a catagory. You read through the pages on this site and sometimes it appears people are scared shitless to name bands they like that are not 'Indie'. Like if a band actually writes a real melody, they are suddenly not cool. I don't understand why you should be 'ashamed' to listen to anything. Some people need to stop taking things so seriously and lighten up...It takes a miserable sod not to go to the local rock club and be able to enjoy singing 'Helena' with their friends. As I said, either I have the most amazing, open minded friends or this musical snobbory is not so much a part of British culture.

Not intended to start an argument, just an observation

i was given a cassette copy of THRILLER for an early birthday, and ruined both it and my fisher price children's model tape player by trying to listen to it underwater in the bathtub (both the tape player and my head underwater).
