Just for clarity's sake: there are other albums (bb&c's The Veil, Parkins/Cline/Moore's Live At Easthampton Town Hall, Retribution Gospel Choir's 3, MANY more...) in which you'll hear Nels annihilating the universe in a way that's relatively absent (not to you neighbors, though ) from the two I mentioned, BUT I wanted to recommend some really Nels Cline albums, you dig?

Other favorites of mine include Interstellar Space Revisited (he and Gregg Bendian play the John Coltrane/Rashied Ali duets), Lovers (big band, strings, the works), and of course Carla Bozulich's Red Headed Stranger (an unbelievable interpretation of Willie Nelson's classic album).

Thanks for naming a new band, but I'm afraid if I give you a detailed opinion of them it'll only reinforce your rather twisted opinion of me. Of all things to critique them on, and there's plenty, trying new ways to sell their work is one of the least. Can't help the system you live in, no one is 'pure' in regards to capitalism

If every band I enjoy went down a monthly subscription route to sell their music I would be broke.

It's also not totally accurate. They do have their subscription club, where you get a monthly mixtape, but those are very explicitly not the "core" albums in their catalogue - those come out less frequently and are distributed through the usual channels. Bandcamp lets any artist set up subscriptions like that to offer a bunch of stuff (new music for free, exclusives, first access to merch) and it's really not that different to signing up for an artist's fan club back in the snail mail days.
But I guess I've learned my lesson about mentioning new artists

My last thought on the music business model stuff. Part of why music sucks these days (sweeping statement but broadly accurate) is that cost of living and housing crises make it near impossible to sustain the lifestyle of a musician unless you're a bohemian rich kid (the group responsible for the worst of arts and politics).

You can't have a Sonic Youth today because you can't bum around NYC making noise rock and refining your sound for a decade.

An awkward subscription or patronage model is one way to sustain such a lifestyle and I don't blame people for being imaginative re: trying to survive as an artist
