I'm going. Bought tix + airplane tix today (November 14th - it's in my country, though, but another state). Rationally, I could not have spent that money, but I would not forgive myself if I missed it. |

I would think that the music is highly personal. i couldn't see them play something that is not 100% involved. They are just not the band to phone it in.

According to this swedish newspaper http://www.expressen.se/noje/extra/1...na-skiljer-sig
The band wont stop. "...but the band will keep playing." |

Sigh. Best wishes to both of them.
(although I have to admit, on hearing this, my first thought was... I hope nothing's happened that will ruin the music for me.) |

Hopefully they're still good friends...I don't know why they would break up but I doubt they never will speak again.
If they could focus more on the band would actually be pretty fucking good. |

What could occur that would cause them to break up after so long? If it wasn't an *occurence* so much as a growing apart... I could understand. But I can't help thinking 'did something happen'. Then again, I know nothing about their personal lives at all. |

What the fuck. I'm still drunk from lunch with wife & friends, I come in here only to reply to the TYPB thread and see this. Seriously, the world is coming to an end.
Ok, I'm drunk and I'm over reacting, it's their life and they know better than I, or any of us, do. But I can't help but feel sad, and hope that these news are a hoax, given that they were one of the most lovely, out of the spotlight, couples in rock ever. Regarding SY's future, if this is true, it will more likely come to halt very soon, so I'm already buckling up and bracing for impact, even though after this one, nothing surprises me anymore. |

I could see SY continue without KIM. Sadly.

I think the first thing one should consider is that they are finishing up these south american dates. That alone tells me that neither of them did something so bad that the other can't stand to be around them. From what few pieces I've been able to put together, I'm thinking that this was a mutual decision. I doubt they are "burned out" on each other. No doubt they love each other...but after so many years of touring/living with one another I can see how they may be interested in a little space. Space for what? Who knows...maybe to explore other people or just the feeling of being free to do whatever one wants (whether it involves other relationships or not). I'd honestly be shocked if the band dissolved over this. Something strange has been in the air over the past few years. Thurston's last solo record seemed wildly "personal" when compared to the majority of his efforts. Who knows. I've always admired their relationship, but beyond that I've always admired the music they've created together more. Ultimately, thats all that matters or should matter to me. If they are happy, I'm happy for them. Maybe they just need a break in the way some long term couples do, and then they're back together after realizing certain things. Maybe not. Whatever, it's their business. Thus far, we know that the band was planning on working on a new album here soon. Also, we haven't heard any change in those plans. Until we do, I wouldn't sweat it too much. Yeah, I realize, or think, hearing a few of the songs live they've played in the past might feel a bit weird. Maybe seem a bit "forced" if they aren't a unit. But whose to say they are even to play those songs, and whose to say that they may not still enjoy playing these songs. They are, regardless of anything, united over the fact that they've had a daughter and their careers at least somewhat depends on each other (i.e. I'm willing to bet Sonic Youth is still both of their more comfy source of income). No reason to stress anything. They were together 27 years, that's a way better run that what most can claim. I'm proud/happy for the both of 'em. Nothing has yet been said that should lead anyone to believe that this is any cause for alarm as far as the band or their friendship is concerned. Just "KIm an Thurston are separating". No reason to stress. But yeah, even I must admit it's definitely weird.

i concur, along w/ everything else you said. I couldn't imagine keeping on as a band if it were me, but who knows? sheesh, feels rotten for long time fans, but who knows? its not our lives, they know what's best for them. |

I don't see the point. That would truly be one of those situations where keeping the band name would be the wrong move. |
