Sonatine is a masterpiece (every Kitano film is a masterpiece, aside from Zatoichi and BRother, but I'd give Sonatine a 10/10). SHARKSKIN MAN AND PEACH HIP GIRL is a masterpiece. PARTY 7, not so much.... in fact, Party 7 is one of the few films to break the rule of "if Tadanoubou Asano is in the film, it's probably one of the coolest films ever."

JOE, watch Survive Style 5+. It's got elements of Funky Forest.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7yN7DfMAzcQ

ME., did I ever tell you about my house screening of Twilight? I showed it at a little screening at my friend's house (he owns a theatre screen an a huge sound system and a projector) amongst a ton of friends, along with pastoral: To die in the country, my film Currently Untitled, Hausu, and Toshio Matsumoto's Phantom (my favorite short film of all time: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kNshDaTJ2BI .. everyone watch that). The theme, of course, was Japanese new wave (though I realize not all those films were in the "wave"; Twilight was made in '94, strangely). Anyway, Twilight has inspired about a thousand shots in my next film.... it's SO brilliant, my second favorite short ever. Can't thank you enough -- definitely the best film anyone's ever reccomended for me on here.

BTW, me., have you seen Kitano's new one THE OUTRAGE yet? I watched it -- unsubbed!! Haha. I was that eager to see it. English subs aren't online yet, so yeah... it was worth it. I was completely enthralled. As soon as I get the subbed one, I'm going to rewatch it.

Films I've watched in the past few days...

I CAN NO LONGER HEAR THE GUITAR - 9/10 ... brilliant. Based on Garrel and Nico's heroin-induced romance. Heartbreaking, brilliant, awesome. Dark... bleak as hell, experimental, my kind of cinema. Anyway, got the Garrel x 2 dvd set for x-mas. Yeah, my x-mas to myself, since no one else is getting me anything. Totally worth it. Beautiful presentation of beautiful films.

DOTTIE GETS SPANKED - 5/10 .. Well, it's a Todd Haynes film, so it's pretty brilliant in a way, extremely well made and strange, but it just didnt do it for me all in all.

FEAR, ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION - 6/10. Had never seen this early Solondz film; Solondz, in my opinion, is one of the most consistent American directors we have -- this film is kind of a dark comedy, like his other films, but felt more like a Woody Allen film... or, like.. Reality Bites or something, at times. I think Solondz has disowned this film, since it's never came out on DVD. Still, an interesting curiosity, one that most people don't know exists..

...and re-watched this with my pal...

FROWNLAND - 10/10 ...Okay, this is the 3rd time seeing this now. I am kinda convinced that this is the best film of the past decade, aside from Apichatpong Weerasethakul's "Syndromes and a Century" and Damon Packard's "Reflections of Evil" (btw, JOE, have you seen Reflections of Evil yet? Actually, ANYONE ON CINEMAGEDDON LOOKING FOR RECCOMENDATIONS: DOWNLOAD REFLECTIONS OF EVIL, THE CORNDOG MAN, AND BRIDE OF FRANK ASAP. THEY ARE 3 OF THE BEST FILMS EVER MADE. ANYWAY...). Another dark dark dark film here on this list, this is depressing as hell and might get on some people's nerves but I loved it. COmpletely original, too, though I guess some will point to Mike Leigh in parts. Just a pathetic character doing stupid things and it's unnerving, it's the most uncomfortable I've ever felt watching a movie, and it blew my mind.

Here's the hilarious trailer:
http://vimeo.com/6194388

First-time director Ronald Bronstein describes his extraordinary film as “a rotten egg lobbed with spazmo aim at the spotless surface of the silver screen.”

That sounds like a great way to watch Twilight, it's weird that it was done in 94', feels like it should be alot older.I've not seen Outrage yet, looking forward to it.I've got Shark Skin Man to watch so that might have to be the next film to watch,or Gozu?.

Thanks again fellas. Boy, do I have a lot of catching up to do...

But seriously, Ishii's work may just be what I need to fully visualize where I need to take my first feature, Death Finger. I can't thank you two enough for getting me started on the right path.

Oh, and me. , I hope you enjoyed the interview.

Fargo for once.....6/10. Decently enjoyable but I wasn't the absolute hugest fan either. Might not be my preferred style of movie too.

Times Square 7/10. I was going to delete it after one viewing, which I do with movies I either didn't enjoy or did but not quite enough to keep, but looking back, I think I'm going to keep it afterall.

I'd definitely watch Shark Skin... I've seen Gozu twice. The first time, I didn't like it at all -- it's like 2 hours and 45 minutes long and just feels completely aimless most of the length -- the second time I watched it, I was on acid, haha. So it was a lot better.

Dial M for Murder (Hitchcock 1954). Exceedingly slow movie and very dated but an interesting story.

I recently bought the special edition 2-disc set of TAXI DRIVER for $5, replacing my previous DVD edition which I gave away for free. TAXI DRIVER is by far and away my favorite film of all time. I'm sure I've seen it 100 times -- literally.

I remember not knowing a fucking thing about it when I bought it on VHS back when I was 14. I really hadn't heard anything about it, the movie just looked intriguing, I was at a pawn shop, it was $3, so I figured what the fuck. I distinctly remember it being 100 degrees outside. I popped the tape in and... wow.. I was glued to the couch. I also think I saw JOE SPINELL's name on the box (MANIAC was the first movie I ever bought, also when I was 14). Every word, every image, every cut, every camera movement, every action; it felt as if it had been specially made for me. If ever there was a movie that I completely "got", that completely seemed to sum up my feelings on life, and the inhabitants in it, it's probably this film. Or at least it was when I was 14.

But, bad news, the new (well, new-ISH.. it came out a few years ago) DVD is missing Scorsese's commentary from the Criterion laserdisc. Yeah, there was a Paul Schrader commentary, and a commentary with.. uh.. some guy who basically just describes what's going on on the screen ("The camera just moved in that scene. It represents isolation." Okay, thanks.). I could only get through about 10 minutes of this guy's commentary, whoever he was, and he said "Hitchcock" about 500 times... So, after doing some digging, I found a 182mb .ac3 file of Scorsese's original commentary; I ripped my Taxi Driver special edition to the computer; and I made the audio track Scorsese's commentary only; and I burned myself a brand spanking new DVD: TAXI DRIVER [VERSION WITH AUDIO COMMENTARY BY SCORSESE] (I also made sure it had subtitles cuz I like to know what the characters are saying as the director talks). Yeah, it's dorky; yeah, I wouldn't do it for most movies, but this is TAXI DRIVER. So, after watching this film many times a year, for 10 years, reading the script, buying new copies after mine got stolen/destroyed by "friends"/given away/worn out, I finally have the definitive DVD edition, and the definitive-commentary-edition. I placed the DVD-R on top of the 2nd disc in my actual DVD. To never be listened to again. But it doesn't need to be! I highly reccomend this audio commentary; if you have VLC media player, you can just listen to it (if you have VLC, also, you can replace the audio for the movie on your computer, you don't even need to burn it).

HERE YA GO:
http://rapidshare.com/#!download|720tg|269806398|Taxi_Driver_Criterion_C ommentary.rar|191197

click on "slow download". Trust me, it's worth it, I don't usually listen to commentaries, but this one was amazing.

Anyway, rating for Taxi Driver?

My favorite film of all time/10.

Anyone hear the plans for Taxi Driver 2?

Jodie Foster, the 47 year old Iris, is now an FBI agent who’s devoted her life to hunting down pimps who draw helpless young girls into prostitution. One day, she’s undercover at a porn theater when she runs into Travis Bickle. He recognizes her and calls to her by name, much to the surprise of the business associates she’s with. He unwittingly gave her up. The next day she vanishes. Bickle goes down to the station to say who he saw her with. Her stubborn boss says, “You’re lying, you fat loser! You just want to relive the old days of shooting up pimps and saving little girls. But you’re not that man anymore! You’re a fat, useless pig!”
So, he starts working out again. He gets back in shape. He sees the man she was with on the street (Leonardo Dicaprio), and follows him. So, he goes undercover and gets in with the sex trafficking racket, hoping to find out what happened to Iris. Anyway, the rest kind of plays out like Quantum of Solace.

If there's any Scorsese film that I liked more than Casino, it's Taxi Driver. That sequel sounds like an abomination though, hopefully there's no merit to that actually getting made. Oh, and I'd have to agree with Scorsese's track being one of the better commentaries I've heard. There's some pretty neat featurettes on that DVD too.

Nice find.
