True Grit

The setting seemed authentic to the time and generally good acting except the outlaws cheesy dialogue seemed a little overly done. Perhaps a statement about girl power, but I did enjoy the performances of Hailee Steinfeld and the incomparable Jeff Bridges.

I watched Nirvana: About a Son I think it was called. A really slow boring Kurt Cobain documentary. It was pretty bad.

Who else is excited as hell for the new Gregg Araki film KABOOM? He (along with Jon Mortisugu, a good e-friend of mine) is one of the most important and amazing American directors we've got. Yeah, so Smiley Face sucked, Splendor was too silly and would've been better as a short -- but, come on, the Teenage Apocalypse trilogy (especially TOTALLY FUCKED UP), the Living End (made for like $3,000... pretty much defines everything I love about independant film... yeah, yeah, I love Slacker, and Todd Solondz and Todd Haynes and all that indie stuff... but stuff like Living End and Jon Jost's stuff seems a lot more interesting and really, in my mind, is mindblowingly creative, inventive, auteur independant cinema), MYSTERIOUS SKIN, and so on... amazing films...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akaCSsd2acE

...and for some reason, this is a screenshot from the film?!:

It's supposedly a sci fi bisexual film. So, I guess it's like NOWHERE, with the aliens and stuff, I don't think it's going to be like SINS OF THE FLESHAPOIDS or anything. Haha.

If you're on cinemageddon and want to see some fucked up films, also make sure and check out Mortisugu's FAME WHORE, TERMINAL USA, MOD FUCK EXPLOSION.. if you're hardcore, also check out his films SCUMROCK, MY DEGENERATION, AND HIPPIE PORN, which all need re-releases since the quality on all of them is non-existent (Scumrock's poor 10th-dubbing-of-a-VHS look is intentional but makes it difficult to watch). Araki actually got contacted to do an MTV show in the mid 90's called THIS IS HOW THE WORLD ENDS. it definitely looks awesome and would've fit the very progressive atmosphere of MTV back then, not being too dissimiliar to the strangely brilliant show DEAD AT 21.

I recently joined myspleen and they have a whole MTV section. They have old video music awards, old 120 minute broadcasts (!). I'm getting the brothers grunt as well as the 94 video music awards. I got BUZZKILL and I got something called WEIRD ASS MTV CARTOONS, which is amazing, it's all those insane bumpers from MTV, like puppets chopping each other up to make the MTV logo. Also, Bill Plympton used to have his cartoons shown on MTV DAILY. Bill Plympton, who is basically the greatest cartoonist of all time (and definitely the most hard working).. just insane. It also had the original Joe's Apartment sketch on there. I was just happy to get Buzzkill. I'm also going to order all of Tom Green's MTV show from stumpy. I have all the canadian stuff -- a LOT is repeated on the MTV show, the first 5 episodes basically -- and I have the best of tom green on mtv and subway monkey hour. But I NEED the cancer special. Tom Green is basically my favorite person of all time.

oh and atsonicpark don't bother with the polanski movie the ninth gate. it has a great story and johnny depp is actually somewhat suitable to the movie, but it's really really boring.

been rewatching zulawski films. He is like Godard, in that he makes films that you kinda have to watch over and over to really get. I mean, there's just so much to take in. But it's all brilliant. Definitely one of my favorite directors -- a true genius. POSSESSION, obviously, being in my top 5 films ever, but everything he's done is indispensable, to be honest.

Its easy to know where to start with Godard. Watch "Breathless". Pretty much all his 1960's stuff is great, and anything with Anna Karina is great.

Mademoiselle 7/10

I'd never heard of this until someone lent it to me. One of the most left-field, and definitely one of the most politically incorrect arthouse movie I've seen.

L'Avventura (9/10)

Love it. This was the movie that first made me take up film studies. I wrote my first academic paper on it and it's still the movie I think about probably more than any other. It's not (quite) perfect; some of it playing like a parody of an arthouse movie. Although other scenes are about as good as film gets, for me. And Monica Vitti remains the most beautiful woman I've ever seen on screen.

Type Godard into the search and read the last page, I reviewed his top 15 best films.

Start with PIERROT LE FOU or WEEK END. I did, and it's the best.

I would definitely rank BREATHLESS amongst his lesser works. LE PETIT SOLDAT, though, is brilliant; all the things one would love about BREATHLESS but way darker and more interesting. THat's a good palce to start. Start anywhere aside from DETECTIVE and LES CARABINERS and you'll be fine, honestly.

DEMONRAIL, yes! Love Antonioni so much. I am a huge fan of his films. I still am not into Zabriskie Point but all the rest -- all the rest -- are my favorite films of all time. Even his short in Eros, as silly and misguided as it is.
