In an extent - A Silver Mt Zion.
It's not that they got bad, but their last albums are incredibly less beautiful than the first ones in my opinion. When they began to focus on the voice, they lost a lot of interest in my opinion. It's not that I expect them to be a GY!BE follow-up, but I just think it doesn't work so well now. |

I don't agree. Horses in the sky was a sheer beauty in my opinion. It's true about the "voice" thing though, Efrim has a characterisic vocal expression and not everybody must be keen on his way of singing.

nothing to be ashamed about man. 'white light white heat' and 'the velvets and nico' are two landmark albums, perfect, and in my opinion, the only true velvet underground albums. the velvet underground to me is the collaboration between john cale and lou reed. the s/t record has some absolutley beautiful songs, and 'loaded' is a nice rock n roll record, but i have always thought of them as the beginning of lou reed's solo career.

I would totally agree that they're more Lou Reed solo works actually. Certainly live these days he tends to play tracks from either of these two. When I saw him he did "Rock n' Roll" from Loaded. I can't reeeallly faulter these musically, but they don't really have the magic of the first two.

Sterling Morrison and Maureen Tucker were good musicians in their own right, and the whole story about While Light/White Heat and VU & /nico sounding the way they do only because of Reed and Cale is a myth. Quiet a few of the songs on those two albums were written collectively much more than Lou Reed would want people to think.

They probably didn't get bad but nothing I've heard is nearly as good as the first two albums.

The Flowers of Romance is my favourite album of their's, possibly because it was the first I heard. To be fair, the later records were John Lydon and some dodgy rock musicians. Possibly better than the reunited Sex Pistols though. |
