BROKEN FLOWERS, while pretty good, is just about one of the most overrated films ever (the script was stolen, btw -- look it up on google -- pretty nuts). That goes for most of JJ's films, aside from LIMITS OF CONTROL, which is one of the best films of all time.

I actually first saw this when I was 17. I was a sheltered child; it was of the first R-rated films I saw, and my first horror (the setting is kinda sci-fi, but the general plot/atmosphere is more in keeping with psychological horror) movie ever. I had never seen anything so graphic or heard dark ambient music like its soundtrack--basically, never exposed to anything so calculated to be as intense as possible and yet be intelligent about it. So naturally, it scared the crap out of me...I got as far as the part where they come across Rennes' body and think they're going in circles before I had to shut it off. Well, I decided to give it another try via the internet (how far we've come since 1999), and I have to say, I really enjoyed it! Not only did I conquer my fear of the movie, but I was also treated to an interesting story and a brillant show of what can be done with so little (the whole thing was shot in one room; they just changed the lighting behind the panels). Yeah, the woman who played the doctor was a little over the top (to think someone as irritable as her could be in charge of saving people's lives) and the some of the effects haven't aged particularly well, but overall, I ended up liking it a lot. Maybe I'll check out the sequel, but I doubt I'll check out the prequel (robbing the Cube of its ambiguity takes away some of its fearsomeness).

I dunno if you're still stimulated by horror shit, but you might wanna give Hack/Slash a go. I haven't gotten around to LOVE AND ROCKETS yet, and haven't even heard of 20th Century Eightball - but Hack/Slash is really, really, really cool! I'm slowly making my way through back-issues but they sell the anthologies/omnibi/graphic novels as well.

Lots of horror, lots of cleavage, lots of one-liners.

It's been a while since I've stumbled onto a film that's has absolutely captured my heart, and this French film by director/writer Céline Sciamma has done just that. "Female sexual awakening" was the tag line on Netflix, and first I have to admit I wrote it off as some chick flick, but the art kept calling to me. Finally I watched it, should ignored my first instincts and just have watched it.

All the way through this film I loved the electronic music that scored the scenes beautifully. I almost wanted to say I probably listen to this person who scored this film, well... I do! Para One composed this entire score! This dude does the beats and production for the phenomenal Ninja Tune/Bid Dada artists TTC (Some of the best foreign hip-hop not known to the majority). I was so excited after credits.

The film itself documents the sexual awaking of female girls, one girl is on the outside looking in at the neighbourhood swim club in suburbia France, the other is the successful and popular leader of the top age group in the club. This film so much more then some cliche young lesbian romp. I will realize this when the aura of the film takes you in.

The final scene was bliss.

Great movie by the director of "The Triplets of Belleville", so it has the same sparse dialouge which allows you to focus and appreciate the artwork of the animation a lot more.

a lot of people like to compare it to 2001, but i don't think i agree with that.
it's an uplifting movie to watch. which i fucking loved.

i smoked a joint beforehand and the music was fantastic all throughout.

highly recommend

Check out TATAMI GALAXY and PARANOIA AGENT if you haven't, eva fans. They're both great! I used to be HUGE into anime... maybe I'll get back into it when done with the graphic novels/comics thing I'm going through right now..
