But why the FUCK must I be deemed elitist by the masses just because I love Merzbow, Godard and Dada? As I said, in this age of mass marketting, Art is more important than ever.

Again I ask, is Night And Fog beautiful? Was a lot of effort put into it? Is it Art?

Absolutely. Well, "can". Artwork does not need to be beautiful, in order to be skillful, concise, intricate, intense, or moving... or, art. What a crock. But I've no real interest in discussing art vs not. It is a non argument.

Who deemed you elitist? Why do you see elitism as a negative concept? Why do you care what they think?

Elitism is not really a bad thing like Savage said.

Do you think we've hit a nerve with Skuj?
What at least some of you are saying, certainly not an uncommon thought, is that a certain artist, with at least tangential connections to da Yute, known for creating exact replicas of soup cans and brillo boxes, is not really an artist. Conceptually, just having the work described to you, Warhol, Pollock or even Van Gogh, might sound like child's work. But seeing the work in person has an entirely different effect (at least on me). I insist that the intent is the important part of an artistic experience.

"beauty" is a self-determined factor.
whitehouse can be beautiful to someone. the last 5 minutes of MOTE are some of the most beautiful sounds I have ever heard ywt they are abhorrently ugly to many people I have played those sounds for. if a man finds beauty in contemplating the hose then that is meaningful, but it does not necesarily make the hose art. a murderer finds his mutilations of people beautiful, and would likely define them as his/her "Art" but does that one person;s definiton make it so? should art be something the collective decides? so many questions!

More than once I've been in a museum and saw a chair or couch or an air vent grill or even a door and thought to myself, "I wonder who's piece this is."

I've seen whole exhibitions where the drains were the best thing about it. Not quite the same thing, but definitely true.

Funny story:
By pure coincidence, the Guggenheim was showing Richard Prince when I went there. Seeing the nurse series was quite enjoyable. But he also has a series of car hoods--particularly GTOs I think. In my neighborhood, I frequently walked past one of these hoods--spiffily done up in grey primer. I always wondered if there was some connection...
