I'd like to mention this one thing from my mushroomery..

life is merely sensory perception. the physic multiverse with all its layered, simultaneous dimensions, does not exist the way you see it, or hear it, or smell it, or taste it, or feel it. These sensations are your mind's eye's interpetation of reality, translated into a language of senses you have grown accustomed and familiar with...

that being said, the real question is not if you believe in ghosts one way or the other, but what kinds of things could possibly explain such a common and mutual perception/hallucination?

Considering the way ghost sightings have changed depending upon the popular culture at the time I would say a little fear and a lot of imagination.

That's kind of what I wonder if that's what a ghost might be. Or sideways through time to another dimension.

the other thing i find interesting about ghosts is that even though people no longer claim to see sea monsters, or dragons, or werewolves, or dog heads, etc. there hasn't been a comparable decline in ghost sightings

If there were people around and no one mentioned the "ghost" it was probably a part of your 10 year old imagination. Notice how two people can NEVER confirm the same sighting.
