I first heard heard his song "everybody knows" in pump up the volume and really liked it. Recently i saw a commercial for that new dvd of his and downloaded a few more songs that i love now like "suzanne" and "so long marianne". I want to know whats the best place to start with him? Whats his most consistent album or would a best of be better? What do all of you like by him best?

Hm, I only got Various Positions, and I like it alot, so I guess it's a good place to start.

"Songs Of Love And Hate" is by far my favorite.
The later stuff with the string sections and tons of high-pitched backup singers does less for me. |

"The songs of Leonard Cohen"
"Songs of love and hate" "I'm your man" The compilation "The best of Leonard Cohen" (also called "Greatest hits") is also a very good start (great choice of songs, contrary to the other compilations). |

"Songs Of Love And Hate" is such a good album. The songs on it are somewhat life changing. "Famous Blue Raincoat", "Avalanche", "Dress Rehersal Rag". Also check out Nick Cave's cover of Avalanche it's on his first record with the Bad Seeds, from Her To Eternity. Good stuff.

Is it the one about his poetry made in the 60s before he became known for music? if it is, it's great. very quaint.

the first leonard cohen album i got was new skin for the old ceremony which seemed a pretty good starting point for me (specially as i bought it on a whim, having not really listened to him before, and i could have easily got one of his less good albums and never gotten into him)...
but songs of leonard cohen is also really good.
