The T-Rex thread made me want to discuss Roxy Music. I like them but the record I prefer is Stranded (maybe because some guitar parts make me think of Tom Verlaine), and in my opinion this record is neglected (people usually prefer the first two).

I'm a huge fan of the first... and the outro to For Your Pleasure? ...Yearrrgh. Pure Eno.

Country Life and Avalon are good shit too, mind.

The first two Roxy LP's are works of genius. Much of the rest of their oeuvre is coma-inducing. If you want to hear Phil Manzanera playing good decent guitar post-"For Your Pleasure" era, check out the Quiet Sun "Mainstream" LP.

I love Roxy Music. I don't know why, because it's not my typical venture in music, but I really like them.

Bryan Ferry always had the best love songs ... even when they weren't actually his (Jealous Guy).

I totally agree with you about Stranded...I especially love Mother of Pearl and Psalm. Am I the only one who thinks For Your Pleasure is overrated? The first half is great, but I usually find myself reaching for the 'next track' button on my cd player when it reaches The Bogus Man.

I'll always thank Roxy Music for introducing me to Eno's first solo albums... I used to really believe that he was from outer space when I was 12.

I love the nihilism disguised as love, or love disguised as nihilism.

I could feel at the time
There was no way of knowing
Fallen leaves in the night
Who can say where they´re blowing
As free as the wind
And hopefully learning
Why the sea on the tide
Has no way of turning
More than this - there is nothing
More than this - tell me one thing
More than this - there is nothing
It was fun for a while
There was no way of knowing
Like dream in the night
Who can say where we´re going
No care in the world
Maybe i´m learning
Why the sea on the tide
Has no way of turning
More than this - there is nothing
More than this - tell me one thing
More than this - there is nothing

Yes it's lemon chiffon... very appropriate for early 70's Eno.

Is there anything post-Eno really worth bothering with? I fucking love the first two, but having only heard the well-worn radio stuff after that I figured it all turned to shit as soon as he left... Should I reconsider?

oh dude, all of the roxy music records, eno or no eno, have their merits. for pleasure, country life, and stranded are my favorites by them. there are periods when i listen to roxy music daily for like weeks on end.

i've always liked the album cover to coutry life:

not sure why.

no, but really, the album cover is so odd, two models in their underwear at a christmas tree farm or enchanted forest or wherever that is - and the one on the right sort of looks like a guy, but not really.

in itunes you can assign any album cover art to any song - so if you don't like the album art for an existing song - find one that is better. just don't ever let itunes automatically download album art or you'll lose all the custom covers.

I love the early Eno stuff the best, but I still like the foray into adult contemporary. Ferry pulled off the dark irony side of it much better than Steely Dan did in my book. All the things that some people hate about later Roxy Music are what make them worthwhile for me, because it is a unique, calculated stance. But I can't help prefering an unschooled Eno making synth burps the most.
