a few weeks ago my partners laptop (his second xps dell) died and had to get fixed. after three weeks of 'next day service' and two new replacement motherboards, it got fixed.
so after that, I was kind of hoping we could get a discount on a new laptop for me. jerks, sent a discounted quote for a laptop $1980. I just spec the same thing online for $1681 only difference being I can't choose a 500gb hard drive, only 320. But there is no way that costs them $300.

^^^ after factoring this in (along with the relative value of Ozdollars), that makes the price of Amerikkkan laptops approximately $2.67.

dell business laptops are good (latitude, precision), consumer laptops are cheap but generally crap, regardless of brand---toshiba, sony, non-pro toilet-lid ibooks (no longer), etc.
lenovo ftw. |

high end toshiba are pretty awesome, and I'd buy a business dell but that would cost me closer to $2500 and I dont have that

yeah i have a low end toshiba and it's crap. broken buttons, etc. i only paid $650 for it so i'm not complaining. for a laptop that rules look for true business class machines and you'll be fine. most of those can take a good beating, run forever without heating up, have long battery lives, you can plug all sorts of things to them, etc. i prefer to have a tower for real work and a laptop for portable goodness. towers = cheap & upgradeable + better ergonomix. |

I love my desktop, it is getting on now( athlon 64 2.2, 2gb ) so will prob start anew late next yr when Im back in an actual house.
but I'm not going to be at home for the first six months of next year, so I need a decent lappy to take with me. cannot road trip without internets. cannot take desktop PC and 32 inch monitor on road trip.

for a 6-month trip look to a refurbished t-series lenovo-- you get the quality + low price and it's built like a tank, and dont forget the chain.

i forgot to add that the t41 featured there would be a sweet buy with a 120gb hard drive and a wireless g upgrade, though anyone can swap that for cheap, but then again they'd have the xp install.
might run a bit slow, but SOLID. -- ps, actually no, i'd pick up this one as is. it's ready to go. it's like 450 bucks american-- sweet. here's a review from back in the day: http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=2285 |
