The captain has to have one eye and a parrot sleeping on his arm throughout the entire movie

I'll see anything even remotely related to pirates.
My friend invited me over and made me watch Thirteen with her. It's probably the worst movie I've ever seen, and not just because of its lack of pirates.

Pirates are the weirdest trend. I don't get it. I've nothing against them, never having met one, but...Why?
Though I do think that they should apologize to all those Spanish merchant-sailors whom they murdered - many, probably, on the deck of their own magnificent gallion, which was undoubtedly earned through nothing less than a lifetime of hard labour and skillful chicanery. I think the trend should really be in favor of the merchants. |

Trend? Tell that to the eight-year-old version of me who checked out Treasure Island from the library so many times that the librarian just gave me the book so I would stop bothering everyone. I'm pretty sure I read that book 12 times that year.
And it wasn't that Illustrated Classics Treasure Island either. But really, if there is a trend beyond Pirates of the Caribbean (which I disliked), I would truly like to be a part of it. Details, details!

Oh don't worry, I'm not accusing anyone of being a trend-follower. I just don't understand why it's a trend to the extent that it is. I guess Hot Topic is to blame for all the world's troubles.
Not that I haven't ever bought anything there, but they ruin many interesting topics that would be better left cold. I've read the first half of Treasure Island at least 3 times, but never finished it. I really liked it too. I don't know why I kept stopping. I think it's about time I read that first half again. And Muppet Treasure Island would be one of my top ten movies of all time. Despite the fact that Jim was played by a girl... |

It sounds like the Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, with more pirates...
Great movie...

This is like the third time in the past week that someone has brought up Muppet Treasure Island. Crazy.
But I still don't understand this pirate craze you are referring to, and Hot Topic's involvement. Did it start with Pirates of the Caribbean, or is there something completely obvious that I'm missing? I do know that the best miniature golf course ever is Pirate's Cove at the Lake of the Ozarks.

Yes, Pirates of the Carribean is the source of the trend, and Hot Topic seemed to thoroughly enjoy the monetary prospects of movie as well. It's not so much a craze - it just seems that anyone who has an eye patch and says "Argh" whilst waving a Jolly Roger stirs excitement of the sort that is often associated with trends.
Illustrated Classics are abridged. |

Even in Treasure Island, the pirates were supposed to be the villains. They were portrayed as such, and they weren't exactly lovable and cuddly. In fact they were vicious, murderous, unsympathetic criminals who turned on their former leader and got their asses whooped. Pirates = cool? If pirates are cool, I'm Thurston Moore. I loved Treasure Island, by the way, a classic adventure story, one of the best, up there with The Count Of Monte Cristo.
