I was driving with a friend this morning, when "Over the Ocean" came on our college radio station, and I said "I constantly forget how much I love this band." She had the nerve to say... "Low are just a poor man's Yo La Tengo." I just about pushed her out of the moving vehicle, because:
1) I have never even thought of comparing Low and YLT before, because they are totally different bands 2) Low is not a "poor man's" anything, imo... they're a class act all their own Anyway... who else loves these guys? Today's incident inspired me to pop in the Christmas EP to help get me into the holiday spirit. P.S. If all you're going to say is "they're boring", then save it, 'cause everyone's heard it before P.S.S. I know there's going to be at least one of you who is defiant and says "they're boring" despite my warning, 'cause y'all are wacky like that. |

Dull band. I like a song or two from them, but couldn't stomach an album.

i'm sorry to have to agree with the above comments. i'm supposed to like this band but in fact i don't.... I have heard every LP and the ones i like well enough are trust, great destroyer and drums and guns, so later stuff. The early stuff bores me to tears. + not that I had ever come to think about them in such terms but a poor mans YLT is not irrelevant... meh. they do have good stuff, but man is it LOWLOWLOW.

I'll apparently be the first to agree with the OP and say that I love Low, especially their really minimal stuff, like Things We Lost In The Fire.
And while I see the similarities between them and YLT (although I'd say you need to also throw in a little Pedro The Lion to match), I wouldn't consider them a "poor man's version." Low definately holds their own ground. And no, I do not think they are boring

They strike me as more of a poor man's Galaxie 500 that forgot to take their Zoloft than a poor man's YLT.

I really, really like the Christmas album.
THINGS WE LOST IN THE FIRE is good. I never explored much beyond that. Those 2 albums seemed to satisfy my Low curiosity enough. |

I don't listen to Low very often, but I really enjoy it when I do. There's a lyrical parity to them that's entirely lacking in substance when others do it.
Having said that, I really want to contradict the sanctimonious arse of the first post.

i love yo la tengo, but i have to admit they have many very boring songs. i love galaxie 500, they are sad and beautiful and annoying all at the same time. |
