Anyway, post rock and math rock are some of the worst musical terminology (IDM too) ever coined by anyone, ever.

From my post on the iheartnoise forum:
Why do people always make a note of hating the name of a genre? From IDM to no wave to post rock, everyone takes exception with the names of genres. I was on some message board for this Japanese band the other day, and some guy said "yeah, they remind me of a lot of math rock bands.." and some guy goes into like 3 paragraphs about how dumb the term math rock is. Jesus, it's just a broad term to describe a sound, who gives a shit what it's called? I know what people are saying; "math" rock.. every rock is "mathy", it all involves counting and numbers, but the DEFINITION of math rock is: highly technical music with lots of time changes, etc. etc etc. Same for something like IDM... IDM definitely sounds different than, say, house music. Why pay attention to the genre name? |

IDM also sounds like a retarded term for people who have just discovered electronica.

How would you describe something like Autechre then? Would you go out of your way to go "Kinda glitchy, industrial layers and noisey beats with little to no melodies"? Why not just say "Oh, it's IDM." It doesn't really fit into any other electronic genre, afterall.
I know your saying the actual NAMES of the genre are stupid but.. still. If you've got a better suggestion, go ahead. "Avant-electronica"? |

Electronica. Most of the prefixes put in front of it are ultimately superfluous, at least the majority of the time. IDM is a dumb American way of describing electronic music, and rather naff.

i'm not so sure about that. i'm not the biggest fan of IDM, but there's a world of difference between that and, say, some happy hardcore or chemical brothers or some shit...both of which would still be classified as electronica. so in some cases, maybe the adjectives or titles given to genres are actually kinda helpful. i know i'd be pissed if my thought process was "man, autechre and super_collider are awesome...and both groups made of two guys.....so are the chemical brothers....i guess i'll buy this chemical brothers album." sometimes that's how i discover new music, and all those extra little doodads and genre descriptions help keep me from having large stacks of junk cds or having to waste money to drive across town to sell them off at the used record store.

Chemical Brothers make music that is in itself the lovechild of Techno, House and even bits and bobs of Hip Hop, as well as pop itself, but still not exactly a duo that you would strictly file under the electronica section. Electronica is generally an umbrella term for a wide range of electronic music that is mainly instrumental and leans towards abstraction, hardly something that applies to the music of Chemical Brothers, which is the fruit of rave guys with stadium/festival aspirations, therefore easily filed into the pop section. House/Hip Hop/Techno have all definite components that elevate them as specific styles, while the music of Authecre/Jake Mandell/Matmos etc incorporates elements that are disparate and come (amongst others) from musique concrete, soundscapes, avantgarde etc, hence the useful and flexible term electronica being widely used to describe them.

the person who invented post-rock music was the first person to play after the end of rock music.
