FAMED COMPOSER PHILIP GLASS SPOTLIGHTED IN FREE UH EVENT FEB. 19 For decades, the music of Philip Glass has captured the imaginations of audiences worldwide. Now, the renowned composer will complement his works with words and images that offer insight into his creative process.
The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts (CWMCA) at the University of Houston will present “Creativity and Collaboration: An Evening with Philip Glass” at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb.19, in UH’s Moores Opera House. In this multimedia event, Glass will use examples from his own career to illustrate how artistic collaborations across genres can influence the development of an artist and can shape a career. The presentation will include film clips, discussion and selections performed live at the piano. Space is limited, and seating is available on a first-come-first-served basis. For additional details, call 713-743-5548.
“Philip Glass is a legendary collaborator, and this event is a rare opportunity to learn how partnerships with other artists have influenced his work,” said Karen Farber, director of CWMCA. “The Mitchell Center’s mission is to promote collaboration among the performing, literary and visual arts, so we build upon on the legacies of such figures as Glass.”
The Academy Award-nominated, Golden Globe Award-winning Glass has built a career spanning nearly four decades. His compositions include symphonies, minimalist arrangements (the amplified violin piece “Strung Out”), opera (“Einstein on the Beach”), film scores (“The Hours”) and music for dance/performance pieces
(“In the Upper Room”). Just as varied as Glass’ catalog are the artists who have collaborated with him: rocker David Bowie, choreographer Twyla Tharp, sitar player Ravi Shankar, playwright/director Robert Wilson and late poet Allen Ginsberg.
This event is part of a citywide celebration of Philip Glass for his 70th birthday. A live concert presented by Society for the Performing Arts will be offered later in the week.

Not likely--I don't think Glass is very popular with any of the theory faculty...He sells too many records...

"Hi, I'm Philip Glass. I did some interesting records roughly a million years ago, come watch me continue to be utterly shit".

No. Fuck off.

OK, let's all say one nice thing about Philip Glass. Here's mine:

He's a better film composer than James Horner.

There.

"I'm Philip Glass. I had the unmitigated gall to unleash mental anguish and lifelong scarring on then-record-store-employee S. Clone, who was just trying innocently to do his job and grade a compilation LP I contributed to by removing the vinyl from its inner sleeve, which just happened to feature me IN A FULL FRONTAL NUDE SHOT STANDING ON THE BEACH. For this I refuse to apologize, for I am Philip Glass."

He did some interesting records. Roughly a million years ago. The problem, essentially, is that he's shit.

Don't get me wrong - when he's good, he's very good. The problem is that there are oodles of better composers operating before and after and at the same time as Glass; these composers have also been more consistent than Glass' 2 operas and a smattering of other bits.

I think there was a thread on minimalism.

Ah. I'll have to dig that up. Even though Glass denies he's a minimalist.

Some of the most dullest moments I've ever spent listening to music were with this schmuck.

Fuck Philip Glass.

What were some of the most interesting moments you've ever spent listening to music? Curious, for sake of contrast.
