I wonder exactly when in our cultural zeitgeist did rough looking burly bearded men become a marker for gay? Was there some sort of backlash from the super clean cut, hairless gays? I wonder?

Totally. These days it's not so strange to see bears in more bars than about 6/7 years ago. To be honest the bearded, masculine type has become such a trendy look for so many gays it's boring, and it's just as clonised as the the hairless type. Also, maybe it's just me, but I find the average age of the type of guys who hang out in bars is much older than it was before. This could be because of the internet.

Maybe there is a shift, since it seems that acceptance is more readily available, and going to the strictly "gay" bars is no longer the only option for the fellas.

do you think it happened when many straight guys decided to co-opt the style and look of the gay guys, the clean cut, super hairless look?

i find the bear types much more appealing than the super clean-cut, smooth and well-dressed gay dudes.
maybe because in my previous job, there was an IT manager who was a typical bear and he was the friendliest, funniest and generally greatest dude ever, and in my current job there's this feminine-looking homo guy who is a total fucking asshole and I can't wait until he gets fired.
