Hey there,
I usually don't start these kinds of threads, but anyways.... what albums by the following artists should I buy first? I'm speaking of the "best" ones or, "ideal starters". So, John Fahey Slater-Kinney Unwound

call the doctor is also great. but SK best album by far is the Woods. a masterpeice...but you might want to strart with an earlier album of theirs (ie call the doctor of dig me out) then progress to the woods.
john fahey-i'm not sure if he put out anything bad. most of his albums are pretty much perfect. i like The Transfiguration of Blind Joe Death the best. but other superb albums are America, death chants and military waltes (im getting this on enext week), the great san bernidato birthday party... but they all are pretty great. i'd also check out leo kottke-6 and 12 string guitar the last band i dont know. |

Get John Fahey. Even a best of is a good place to start with Fahey. Or The Yellow Princess, that's a really good one.

Disciple White Cross by Fahey
New Plastic Ideas by Unwound Those are both the best entry points for a Sonic Youth fan. Sleater Kinney, I never really got into, even though I saw them play parties in Oly and stuff. I liked Heavens to Betsy and Excuse 17 both better than the group they evolved into. My favorite Unwound album is the last one, Leaves Turn Inside You, but New Plastic Ideas is probably a better entry point (though arguably Fake Train really is so you can just retrace the whole history of the band after Sarah joined.) |

Dig Me Out. I can't type that without singing the rest of that verse. And Muppet dancing.

do NOT start with Leave sTurn Inside YOU for unwound
it is the end start with fake Train and New Plastic Ideas and you will then be able to fully appreciate Challenge for Civilized Society and Leaves Turn Inside You

Pure gold. I actually started listening to Fahey w/ a bootleg of his that was featured in this forum, (Bootleg/share thread), but there's a great box set of Fahey's released on Table of The Element's that's devoted to giving first time listener's a better oversatnding of what Fahey was all about. If you have the $, &/or the means to start listening to Fahey, I'd choose the box set, "Sea Changes & Coelacanths: A Young Person's Guide To John Fahey".
