"I like her new album" = "I want to shoot my load over her tits"?

If it wasn't for Scarlett being "well fit, innit", would anyone give the remotest shit about her acting career?

I can't understand how she polarises people the way she does. She's not a bad actress (Ghost World, Lost in Translation) and it's fairly safe to say that she's quite an attractive woman. I've not heard her music and I doubt it'll be something I care for, so until I hear it and am convinced otherwise, I'll just pass on it. How she's become some kind of a joke in so many people's eyes both baffles and kind of irritates me. She's a Hollywood star. No more, no less.

Perhaps my lack of cutting her some slack comes from suffering "Lost In Translation" when it came out. She was good in "Ghost World" for sure, but, er, I dunno, I guess I'm in a bitchy mood tonight...

And maybe I'm in an unusually forgiving one. I dunno. I actually thought she was excellent in Lost in Translation, a film I like, without thinking it's the 'cult classic' some seem to. Anyway, I just think that in today's dross-dominated Hollywood she's hardly way up there in my list of hate figures. I'm sure her success is down primarily to her looks, but come on, since when has Hollywood been bothered about much else - at least when it came to women?

Tis true - we don't expect Hollywood to be churning out Chekov stage actors of either sex. Y'know, I think what gets me goat is the ubiquity of media types wafling on about her. So in fact I'm blaming her for something she's not got any control over. There's a point here about how our opinions on people can be shaped (no matter how much we try to deny it) by the media.
Bearing in mind the above, I'm going to withdraw my previous comments re Scarlett. It was more than a tad unfair of me, I think now.

I just listened to both the versions all the way through and honestly don't think it's that bad a song. It sort of reminded me a lot of some of the lesser interesting Pogues stuff, where Cait O'Riordan sang instead of Shane. Let's put it this way, if that gets to numero uno in the charts I'd be a lot happier than if it goes to Kylie mogadon Minogue, or the like. Just like most of what she does, it's surprisingly half decent. Still not a patch on Paris Hilton's Stars are Blind, of course, but then few things in life are these days.

WOW! That's so weird, I was thinking it had a bit of a Tom Waits thing about it, but the mixture of her vocals and the Irish instrumentation made me think more of the Pogues. Anyway, listening to it again now, and beginning to think it could be a bit of a grower. I'll listen to the Tom Waits version straight after. Thanks for that Skullsy. |

somehow she went from being a cool indie actress practicing her craft to a Hollywood whore attached to some large breasts. I guess I'd do the same for $20 million dollars. |

Well, I just listened to Tom Waits version and, while I'm sure this'll have me banished to the message board equiv. to the salt mines for saying it, I honestly prefer SJ's version.
And I don't even know about her whoring herself. Since making LiT, her choice of films has largely been quite good. OK, The Island wasn't great but most of the rest have been decent enough. Certainly a lot more interesting than those of 90% of her peers. I say she's still pretty cool and the fact she's managing to maintain at least some kind of identity within the whole HWood machine only strengthens my view of that. |
