Acrid Avid Jam Shred The Waxen Pith Wax The Nip Icct Hedral Ventolin Come On You Slags Start As You Mean To Go On Wet Tip Hen Ax Moo Kid Alberto Balsalm Cow Cud Is A Twin Next Heap With Just listened to the whole thing for the first time in 2 years. I really think it's his best. Only songs I don't like are Slags, and Start as you mean to go on cause the beats are way too fast and clanky. But the rest of the album is so ingenious. I can't help laughing when I hear Ventolin. I can't believe someone made music like that. It sounds like death |

I read a review in a music mag (I think WIRE?), that he took off some time recently to go on a southpole expedition with some friends. Typically Aphex. Maybe someone has read about it and can elaborate on that?

It's a wonderful LP (although, amazingly, it's bettered by the next release Richard D James Album):
Acrid Avid Jam Shred The Waxen Pith Wax The Nip Icct Hedral Ventolin Come On You Slags Start As You Mean To Go On Wet Tip Hen Ax Moo Kid Alberto Balsalm Cow Cud Is A Twin Next Heap With Not a wasted track (such is the man), and the LP covers an impressive variety of styles. THere's a nice video on youtube for Alberto Balsalm that someone's put together. Worth checking out.

I recalled your thread of old, Hip Priest, and decided to bust out a few albums the other day for reminiscing. Time and contemplation have led me to change my previously held opinion, and I now conclude that Come to Daddy far surpasses Richard D. James. Windowlicker, despite its technical non-album status, is a close second.

I hate the cover art of this album SO MUCH.
When it came out, I didn't get it solely because I didn't want anything that ugly in my home. Not a bad album, but not my favorite of his either. |

I think the finest, most accessible track he ever produced has to be Alberto Balsalm.

Gabba.
On another note, why do people here seem to ignore Selected Ambient Works 85-92? That album is a classic Aphex Twin album... The almost tribal, naturalistic beats, layers upon layers of texture and melody... It's about as far removed from cheesy, typical Euro-trash as is humanly possible... No offence, of course.

It's quite different musically from ICBYD, or any of the Twin's other albums, but the spirit of Aphex Twin, nonetheless, is ever-present.

Quite right. That is by far my favorite Aphex Twin album. Richard D. James just gets a higher place in the hierarchy than I think it ought to, but that's simply down to my personal preference. That being said, I agree with porkmarras (as I've bitched about before) that while I do like him, he is overrated. If he went back to his ambient 'roots' and ceased his quest for shock value, I'd appreciate his music much more. |

But I do appreciate his scare tactics. It's spawned the whole Venetian Snares breakcore thing as well as squarepusher drill and bass... The man basically invented modern electronic music(for better or worse); and his moving in a different direction from his initial forays are; to me; a commendable effort. I mean, if he had stayed and done Selected Ambient Works 3... Bleargghh... We would never have had Come To Daddy or Richard D. James Album.

True to an extent; I simply think his motive is getting in the way of his music. He's more than proven his capability of diversity, so I'd be interested to see him stray from his current tactics.
He's definitely spread his influential seed; Squarepusher, in my humble opinion, is a copycat, but one I delight in - Big Loada gets a lot of play on my end. |
