You don't have to be an audiophile (I'm not) to know you should do this regularly if you want to keep your LPs in good shape. But when do you do it? I replaced mine yesterday simply because it's been two years since I last did, and I'm paranoid as hell about wear and tear on my LPs. I wasn't noticing anything wrong sounding about LP playback. The old stylus cantilever is a bit grody looking though. I have the Grado Blue cartridge, which I highly recommend, by the way. It's not that expensive (under 80 bucks) but man it makes your turntable sound good.

i've never replaced a stylus but i have had to replace a turntable because it sped up and it sounded too high pitched/fast.

i recently replaced the stylus because the one that the turntable had was so fucked, the sound would come on and off so bad i thought the wiring was wrong.

Okay, yeah that's pretty bad. I guess I'm neurotic about it. Paranoid's the wrong word. Or is it?

Yeah, I owned a BSR in the 70s that played fast as a normal thing. I didn't realize until years later that I'd been listening to all my records essentially wrong. I noticed it one day when I sort of recognized a song on the radio and thought, oh, I like the slower version, and then realized it was actually the same version.

Well, we do have a je ne sais quoi the younger ones lack.
I have no idea what the hell I'm saying. I feel like communicating complete in non sequitors from now on. Would that be okay?

Are you insulting my intelligence.
Anyways, pertaining to the subject of the thread, I don't know what stylus is. Please excuse my ignorance. |

There's old, and then there's old. It's all in the outlook.
I wore my Joy Division T-shirt to dinner with some new South Carolina friends the other night. They're around my age. They'd never heard of Joy Division. When I tried to explain, they said, "Oh, an 80s band. They all sound alike." Did I let it bother me? No. Too bad for these people, I thought, more to be pitied than scorned, to think they must go home to their Celine Dion and old Heart compilation CDs that probably they don't even play. I'm not making sense, am I? Are the drugs kicking in?

Ha ha, thanks, Tanky. And for the record, I think you're the coolest member of today's youth movement that I know.
