Mayo Thompson - Corky's Debt to His Father
Only consistant member of the Red Crayola's only solo album and for some reason, it doesn't feel like a Red Crayola record. The record is very personal, with most of the lyrics taking on the perspective of an oversexed 16 year old boy. Has a country-folk feel to it. Definitely one of my favorite records of the past year; there was a two month period where I listened to this record three times a day. Lost in Tyme has a link to it, somewhere. http://lost-in-tyme.blogspot.com/ |
Jonathan, that's so fucking weird, I just randomly downloaded that album 2 days ago. Love the slide guitar stuff on there..

Tim Buckley - Dream letter live in London 1968
Best acoustic live album ever. Tim Buckley - Starsailor Free-jazz and avant-garde music inspired record, with great vocals and surrealistic lyrics. Experimental music at its best. |
Grails - The Burning Of Impurities
Great for all your escapism needs! Rich production, zillions o nifty textures, mystic middle-eastern, ancient instrumental rock with ultra talented and tasteful instrumentation. A bit more 'structured' than there previous one, The Black Tar Prophecies I, II & III, which has more of a freeform 'latter Miles Davis period' meets 'The Holy Mountain' kind of vibe. |
I recommend anything by Daniel Johnston. Pure genius, man.

Power Of Pussy - Bongwater
I bet a lot of you already know of and/or dig this album but anyone who hasn't heard it should pick it up. Funny and brilliant. "Nick Cave Dolls" is a brilliant track. Bizarre samples, folky songs about sexual deviance, and everything in between. |
bongwater are fucking awful.

My Brightest Diamond - Bring me the workhorse
At first Buckley, Björk or PJ Harvey influences are obvious, but after several listens the songwriting reveals a personality of its own. Great vocals (surely one of the best female voices ever), great guitar playing and great string arrangements. |
