Funny thing is, NO ONE has anything to do with being born. National pride is totally lost on me.
I will feel no pride and carry no guilt for my race, gender or country of origin. They are a set of givens, and the advantages and disadvantages of those givens are what I live with.
Being born to whom you are born to in the country those people happen to live in is a funny thing to get worked up about.

Toilet & Bowels 04.26.2006 04:39 PM

i don't care a fig where people are from, it's the laying of claim to being something you aren't that irritates me.

Savage Clone 04.26.2006 04:43 PM

When you live in a country of immigrants, geneaology brings this stuff to light. It's just heritage and history; very few people actually "lay claim" to being European, they just acknowledge where their ancestors are from. They will almost all still call themselves Americans.
This is a very young country.

Toilet & Bowels 04.26.2006 05:52 PM

well i was thinking particularly of the english people who suddenly have irish roots come st.patrick's day (i'm english and have no irish ancestry) when i said about the laying of claim, those people wind me up especially because it's only in recent years that there has been this trend of fashionable irishness.
it goes back to what you were saying about national pride, i don't really have any pride in being english, and so i find it utterly absurd when people take pride or celebrate a heritage that is either fictitious or increasingly tangential.
i suppose it might be interesting to know where your ancestors came from but i don't see the need to cling to it or make a song and dance of it. infact i would say do the exact opposite.
i guess people do all sorts of stuff to make their lives seem more interesting, but i reserve my right to be vexed by them.

Savage Clone 04.26.2006 05:55 PM

I think we are on the same page here.
I think of myself as American, as I have had family here for many generations. I am neither proud nor ashamed, because I had nothing to do with it.
"Tangential" is a great word for what you are talking about.

True, but it's hard to fuck a pig while wearing a sheet.

It seems to me that a southerner that keeps a confederate flag is like a German that still keeps a Swastika flag

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 04.27.2006 07:40 PM

Yeah, people who wave the southern flag are morons.
