astounding and embarrising acts of Sonic stupidity
Okay, it pains me to admit this, but I only realised a couple of weeks ago that EVOL was love spelt backwards.
Now tell me your acts of sonic ignorance to make me feel better about myself. Go! |
I couldn't tell the difference between Thurston and Lee the first time I listened to DDN, I thought is was just the same guy singing.

mine was similar but for some reason when catholic block and disappearer came to mind i always thought it was a lee song even tho it's clearly thurston. |
All I knew when I first listened to DDN was that there was a girl in the group and it was supposed to be loud and off-the-wall from what I was listening to at the time which was a ton of Pixies.
|
I find I always get Nic Fit and Scooter and Jinx mixed up, keep thinking the wrong one is on the wrong album.
|
When naming the album off the top of my head I always leave out A Thousand Leaves and sometimes Washing Machine.
|
I used to get Eric's trip and providence mixed up?
there is a reason for this but it will only make sense in my strange head and my strange 'feelings' albums tend to give off XD I can try to explain if anyone wants, but i'd rather not. |
I thought Kim was a man.
|
i remember looking through entertainment weekly before i got into them. this was back when murray street was going to get released and they did a whole story on them. i was like "shit.. the magazine says they've been around forever. maybe i should listen to them".
i thought they were just a full on punk band that did one good album. |

Cruel man, cruel. |
When I first heard of Sonic Youth, I assumed they were a band of kids or teenagers. Then, I saw a photo of a 30-year old Thurston in a magazine, and that confirmed to me that they were a band of teenagers.
It wasn't until I saw their CD's in a record store, some with copyright dates in the early 80's, that I figured they must be adults. |
I thought Lee sung on Candle for quite some time.
|
you mean other than their fans doing humorless parody threads?
|
i once, after hearing their name everywhere, thought they were a multi million selling artist.
How wrong i was. |
I first thought that the title of their last album Rather Ripped, was "Rather Stripped". I misread that.
|
Back in 2002 i thought that both the kids on the front cover of Murray Street were Thurston & Kim's. I told my mum they had two kids names Stella and Coco, and she laughed and said "like their favourite drinks".
|
When I first got into Sonic Youth, I would look up guitar tabs on the internet. If I thought a song was worth playing, I would only bother learning Thurston's part because I thought Lee wasn't as important.
|
While your reasoning was wrong, some of Lee's stuff (ussually tuned with a lot of doubled notes) can be frustrating to new guitarists who don't quite understand relationships and patterns yet.
|
It took me a full year back in 1988-89 to realize that lee sung on DDN also. I just thought it was thurston in a lower tone or something.
it blew my mind also, that the burnin up single was a 33 rpm, NOT at 45 anyone with that single should play it at 45. it fucking rocks hard like the old minutemen |
I wish I had a record player : (.
|
I thought Theresa's Sound World was Lee at first. It is a bit low for Thurston
|
For some reason I always remember Disappearer as a Lee song, until I actually listen to it or see the video.
I only ever knew them for 100% and Teenage Riot until a few years ago. I liked those songs, but never bothered looking into them more until I found a bunch of tapes at Value Village. Wow. |
Before listening to them, I thought SY was a 6 guitars - band, like guitar army or someting like that. In fact, the first time I saw a report about them, it was about Lee and Thurston's cooperation with Glen Branca. I thought Glen was in the band.
I'm an idiot. |
I thought Lee was singing on Theresa's Soundworld when I first got Dirty too.
|
Shit, isn't he? I haven't heard that song in ages, I thought it was Lee.
|
I bought Rather Ripped. :)

And I used to think Sister wasn't very good - I thought it was too "pop" and Schizophrenia was the only good song. |
When I bought SYR5 on wax, I didn't bother adjusting the RPM and thought it was just this badass slow, sludgy experimental album. I knew the album was experimental beforehand, so I just assumed Kim's deep slowed down vocals were meant to be heard that way
|
Quote:
i wasnt the only one then!! i mean they could have printed 33 rpm on the fucking label!!! i used to listen to experimental jet set a lot and make excuses for its poor quality! |
:( I like EJSTNS!
|
Quote:
I LOVE EJST&NS hence, the username!!!! It's an awesome album!!!!!! |
I know! It gets so much flack here, I prefer it to Dirty.
|
I also had the Thurston/Lee vocal thing with Dirty (first SY album I heard). It took me months of listening before I realised that Wish Fulfillment wasn't sung by Thurston.
|
Quote:
oh yeah, me too! |
