Crystal Castles

Well, I didn't see a thread yet, so I'd like to say I think they're fantastic. I'm moving to Toronto, too.

"Constructive criticism"... ?

davenotdead 05.12.2008 11:35 PM

they are pretty great... the album is repetitive but so damn good.

flophousefloozie 05.12.2008 11:43 PM

Repetitive? Really?

davenotdead 05.12.2008 11:46 PM

the beats. i didnt notice it so much... but then friends would comment about it when i show it to them , and they are kinda right...

flophousefloozie 05.12.2008 11:54 PM

I suppose. I'm easily amused when it comes to "beats".

There are so many sounds overlapping, that if the beats became anything more complex, I think it might destroy the entire sound. In that sense, I think it's necessary to simplify that component...

atsonicpark 05.13.2008 12:30 AM

A bit too two-dimensional for my tastes but a song here or there is nice to listen to. There's just no depth to the music to make me want to listen to it constantly.

SYRFox 05.13.2008 12:33 AM

Hmm I don't know. I hear about them all the time from people that has similar tastes as me, they're friends with HEALTH, but then I listen and I can't find anything I like... maybe I didn't try enough

ZEROpumpkins 05.13.2008 02:04 AM

Did you guys hear about Crystal Castles ripping off some other 8bit band?
And yes, I'm serious.

PAULYBEE2656 05.13.2008 07:55 AM

the alice practice single is fucking amazing as too is their demo/session tracks single as well. but the album is so so. the 2 great eps are the first half of the album then it just goes all wrong. on first listen i was like... yeah, great, fucking great.... oh no, noooo .nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo...

shame because i like em but sorry, if you are a one trick pony, you better be able to do that trick standing on your head........

at least they are way better than hot shit... i mean chip.

flophousefloozie 05.16.2008 10:07 PM

Just one little bump. Just one.

Cantankerous 05.16.2008 10:10 PM

fucking love them

super_charger 05.17.2008 08:49 PM

I'm from Toronto and they weren't even on my radar until they exploded, but I liked what I've heard so far.

fugazifan 05.18.2008 12:42 AM

i might be moving to toronto in a few years

Hot Chip rules. They're really fun, and even their ballad songs that can seem annoying actually are interesting - at least live, 'cause if they didn't play them when I saw them two months ago, I'd probably have died of a heart attack, because the 5 first songs were hyper energetic.
But I don't really see what's the point comparing CC and Hot Chip, they have almost nothing in common except that they play electropop (okay sometimes Hot Chip use retro sounds as well but that's not really the same thing)

PAULYBEE2656 05.18.2008 05:30 AM

hot chip are probably one of the worst bands ive ever had the mispleasure in seeing.. i really think they are overrated and yeah, they dont have much in common with crystal castles except for the trendyness scenester electro clash/ indie crossover thing..........

this is a PERSONAL opinoin on hot chip, nothing more nothing less.. the first album was palatable to a point, the second one was god awful...... live they are terrible, live they are dull boring and just like watching a kids trying to be adults..... sorry, the other way around.... madness for a technopop generation....

also i wasnt comparing then to cc, i was just merely making a comment but now you brought it up........

Derek 05.18.2008 06:50 AM

I think they are awful tbh.

Just something for the NME to latch onto, no real substance in their songs, sounds like a gameboy dying etc.

Agreed.

And someone mentioned earlier that Hot Chip was just a thing for hipsters to latch onto.

WE ARE TALKING ABOUT FUCKING CRYSTAL CASTLES, FOR CHRIST'S SAKE!

atari 2600 05.18.2008 10:09 AM

Settle down there, Pessimist. It was PAULY that originally turned many of us on to them. And besides, I'm mostly in agreement with his abbreviated critique.

PAULYBEE2656 05.18.2008 10:34 AM

OK, JEEZ... I MUST BE SPEAKING A DIFFERENT ENGLISH TO MANY...

I GOT THEIR DEMO SINGLE.. I LIKED IT, CRYSTAL CASTLES WE ARE TALKING ABOUT........
i then got their excellent alice, practice e.p. the one with the blackened eye madonna photo (which is now banned with original artwork) and loved it, amazing shit. i was excited about this band... i then got their remix album which was pretty ok for a remix album and then i got their new album which is the first 2 singles (i have already mentioned their quality in the above couple of sentences) and 8 other tracks of pretty repetitive drivel.........

so crystal castles were great, the album is a let down after the 2 e.p.s tracks have finished... nothing new and for god sake, anyone who doesnt see the scenester thing and media hype surrounding these is blind!

as for my hot chip jibe, THATS ALL IT WAS, A COMMENT ON A PISS POOR ELECTROCLASH BAND THAT HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH CC APART FROM THE FACT THEY ARE TRENDY AND USE COMPUTERS...

so maybe next time you plan to jump down someones neck, how about doing some fucking research first or at least reading the fucking posts......

sorry guys but for christ sake as the pessimist put it!!!! read people read......dont assume!

Hell.

I don't like either band at all, but they are both WELL within the province of hipster-shiek, so I think it a bit unfair to say (in a negative fashion) that either band is celebrated by hipsters.

PAULYBEE2656 05.18.2008 10:39 AM

erm.... cc are a total hipster band, ive been at cc gigs and beautiful people abound.. hot chip are celebrated by kidz and ravers... end of story....

shame this thread went from music discussion to tight jeans and russel brands haircut critics......

cc= 6 or 7 excellent songs
hot chip= who gives a fuck.......

im gonna stop now!

SORRY ABOUT THE USE OF THE WORD HIPSTER

Antagonize!

What's so bad about ravers? Aren't hipsters just sorta, eh, fauxhemian?

PAULYBEE2656 05.18.2008 11:16 AM

ravers= tops off, whistles and vicks....

english is certainly a different animal on this side of the atlantic...

davenotdead 05.18.2008 05:49 PM

i dont care who else likes them. i like them, bitch

alteredcourse 05.19.2008 03:05 AM

I'm enjoying the pleasure of not having had my cynical spots rubbed from being around whatever scene these guys are in prior to catching them . I'm really diggin' their newly released s/t , thanks flophousefloozie for mentioning what you're into these days .

flophousefloozie 05.20.2008 07:57 PM

I seem to find that all discussions regarding personal opinions on a band become a way of titling a fanbase.

alteredcourse 05.20.2008 09:27 PM

How do you mean ? Like how many diverse people can simultaneously enjoy distinct genres ?

batreleaser 05.20.2008 09:37 PM

ive always wondered what defined a hipster? if it means you like to dress well and listen to underground music, then, i dont mind hipsters, i suppose i could be one.

it it means pretentious narcissicists who feel an heir of superioriity to all around them, then fuck them, but i suppose i still could be one.

dionysusundone 05.20.2008 09:54 PM

If dressing well and listening to underground music is all it takes to be a hipster, then sign me up.

I suppose it could be the snobby thing, but moreso I believe it's the thought that hipsters only listen to what's 'cool' atm. Crystal Castles now, Animal Collective last month, that kinda thing.

alteredcourse 05.20.2008 10:36 PM

That definition would be a favorable one .

If it was just about dressing well , then great , let it be so . Awesome . Who cares about a name when you are dressing well on your own terms and it happens to be in the style of the time . WOot !

Another one , would be , a person that abides by anything in fashion just for being in fashions sake - being hip merely to be hip . Doing the hair , the clothes , the music , that goes along some sort of design made by a scene and not really by their personal interests . Its a sort of safety net . I tend to dub a person a hipster when I see a the same pattern I've seen a milllion times just as surely as I've seen any pop number put together , but the rub is that the hipsters have the irritating smug sneer of mistaken individuality .

jimbrim 05.21.2008 01:46 PM

crystal castles bore me

Rob Instigator 05.21.2008 02:09 PM

hipster means

YOU ARE HIP TO THE NEW SHIT

Rob Instigator 05.21.2008 02:09 PM

those who use "hipster" as a derogatory term are just sad because the "hipsters" made them feel left out.

I thought it had something to do with people who want to out-do eachother in whatever way they consider "coolness" to be.

That's beyond the point, though. If I'm not a hipster, am I not allowed to listen to Crystal Castles?

Because I could be a hipster.

PAULYBEE2656 05.24.2008 10:02 AM

isnt it funny when people give an opinoin about a bog standard band that happens to be in vogue at the time, they get shot down and be classed as snobby? this is the funniest thread ever..................

so to all...
im sorry i gave my opinion, and im sorry i used the word "hipster" to describe a bunch of people who like a band for fashion not for the actual music (which is not dierected at anyone here but if the show fits and all...)and im sorry for having an opinion.......

SORRY ABOUT THE USE OF THE WORD HIPSTER

alteredcourse 05.24.2008 10:35 AM

After several listens to their s/t , I still enjoy the first 8 tracks immensely, but the last 8 bore me quite a bit and really hurt the album as a whole . If they had left it at that 8 , it would have been a much more substancial album . Or they could have waited ? Dont know .

They're opening for NIN over a section of their tour . Hmm .

now someone gets my point!

Toilet & Bowels 05.24.2008 10:45 AM

just listening to the myspace now, i like them (not the acoustic song though). but obviously i'm now conflicted about it because i found out from reading this thread that "hipsters" like them, and if i want to fit in with the most open minded sonic youth fans then i'm not allowed to like crystal castles and must act snotily towards the people who enjoy their music.
