Sonic Youth do Dylan
June 12, 2007

Sonic Youth have recorded a new song to an upcoming Todd Haynes directed movie. The film, titled "I'm Not There", is about the life of Bob Dylan and follows seven characters, each embodying a different aspect of Dylan's life story and music. The soundtrack also features contributions from Stephen Malkmus (produced by Lee Ranaldo), The Hold Steady, Calexico and others.

Very cool. Can't wait to hear it. Wasn't there a song by Dylan that Lee covered. I'd really like to hear that.

Did Todd Haynes do some of that Corporate Ghosts DVD for SY? I'm sure I recognise his name...

Looking forward to this, especially as I'm a big Stephen Malkmus fan.

SONIC YOUTH RECORDS DYLAN SONG FOR TODD HAYNES FILM
Sonic Youth has recently redorded a version of the rarely-head Bob Dylan song 'I'm not There' for the Todd Haynes movie of the same name. Recording was done at the band's own studio with John Agnello and Aaron Mullan. Lee has also recorded a group of Dylan songs for the film with a group consisting of Tom Verlaine (gtr.), John Medeski (organ/keyboards), Tony Garnier (bass) + Steve Shelley (drums) and guest vocalists including Verlaine, Stephen Malkmus, Karen O, Eddie Vedder and Mira Billotte.

I wonder when it will be released. The film will be playing from September 21st. Do they release soundtracks in the U.S. on the same time the movie is out.
If so September is going to be a great month with this and with the Thurston and Magic Markers releases.

Randall Poster and Jim Dunbar supervised the soundtrack, which will feature artists as diverse as Willie Nelson and Yo La Tengo playing Dylan songs, as well as songs performed by Dylan himself.

We Forgot Cat Power: More Musical Interpretations In The Zimmy Film

We've done some digging and a reliable source has given us a musical update on the tunes recorded for the Todd Haynes directed Bob Dylan biopic, "I'm Not There."

Of course we just wrote about the bands who have recorded Dylan songs for the film; some of them include Yo La Tengo, Sonic Youth, Stephen Malkmus (he's a Portland buddy and neighbor of Haynes), My Morning Jacket and Calexico.

Now we've learned that Yo La Tengo has recorded two songs for the film, "Fourth Time Around" (from Blonde on Blonde) and "I Wanna Be Your Lover" (from the boxset retrospective Biograph).

Amusingly enough, in our aforementioned "I'm Not There" musical re-cap, we forgot to mention something we had already reported: Cat Power covering "Stuck Inside of Mobile With the Memphis Blues Again" with the Memphis Rhythm Band (the fantastic backing band she toured with in the spring of '06). Here's what we wrote back in April:
The [Paper magazine] article was full of other very interesting tid-bits as well. Turns out the song [Marshall] recorded for Todd Haynes' upcoming Bob Dylan artsy-biopic, "I'm Not There," will be the song, "Stuck Inside of Mobile With the Memphis Blues Again," from Blonde on Blonde. She's "unabashedly fanatic," about Dylan and has a shrine dedicated to Zimmy on her living room bookcase ("It's tacky, let's face it," she told the magazine).
And lastly, keep in mind: Just because a song has been recorded for a film doesn't neccesarily guarantee its inclusion in the film. While we've reported and collated a ton of potential songs that could be in the film, it doesn't neccesarily mean they'll actually be in the film. But here's to hoping...

The Leaked Clip

Some people are suggesting the guy in the car next to Dylan/Jude/Cate Blanchett is John Lennon. It's all speculation of course, but we're not really sure we buy that. If that's John Lennon, whoever that actor is played by (Adam Goldberg? It's extremely hard to tell) is doing a pretty strange interpretation (and a terrible Lennon accent). A comment posted in the Rolling Stone blog story section assumed it was the Animals' Alan Price which to us doesn't sound as dubious as Lennon, but again, it's all conjecture. Having just watched the clip again, we're going to bet it's not Lennon.

http://theplaylist.blogspot.com/2007...-as.html#music

The Music
A lot has been written about the music in the film and whether the featured Dylan songs would be cover versions or original incarnations. Here's what we know so far (there reportedly will be at least some original versions) :
- Movie music Tastemaker Randall Poster and Jim Dunbar did the music supervision for the film (Poster did music supervisions for "Velvet Goldmine" and all of Wes Anderson's films)
- Stephen Malkmus covered "Ballad of a Thin Man" and "Maggie's Farm" with

Dylan bandmember Tony Garnier in his band and Sonic Youth's Lee Ranaldo in the producer's chair.
- Hoboken indie-rockers Yo La Tengo recorded a Dylan cover for the film according to Variety.
- A recent color correction screening of the film revealed that one scene's dialogue is taken from the Dylan song, "She's Your Love Now," plus confirmed the song My Morning Jacket covered, "Going To Acapulco " (from the Basement Tapes).
- Sonic Youth were asked by Haynes to record a version of the eponymous Basement Tapes track, "I'm Not There," and it was initially unclear whether the song would be used, but the same color screening confirmed the use of the song in the film, as well as Christian Bale role as the long-rumored evangelical Dylan who leaves the music industry to become "a ordained minister and is performing 'Pressing On'" (from the album Saved).
- '60s folk legend Ritchie Havens contributed a cover.
- Calexico contributed a rendition of Street Legal's "Señor (Tales of Yankee Power)", joined by folk legend Willie Nelson and flamenco guitarist Salvador Duran. The band performed and briefly discussed their cover on Minnesota Public Radiolast September.

- The Hold Steady, cover the B-side "Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window?", according to a post on soundengineer John Agnello's website. Their keyboardist Franz Nicolay confirmed the band's participation in the film on his own website
- The little-known Montreal band, the Royal Mountain Band were cast as The Band in the film (They were named the Hawks at the time). According to the Montreal Gazette members of Wolf Parade and Montreal rockers Starvin' Hungry also auditioned for the part, but the RMB won over Haynes with a stellar audition of "Ballad of A Thin Man."

Rumor and Innuendo
- A posting on an IMDB message board claimed Mason Jennings (son of Waylon) recorded a cover of "The Times They Are A Changing" which Christian Bale apparently sings in the film (though historically this era wouldn't jive with Bale's/Dylan's 'I've found God' era).
- Micheal Stipe, PJ Harvey and Jack White were rumored to be contributing songs for the film, but White's publicist confirmed that he had no involvement in the film.

October 30 release?

http://theplaylist.blogspot.com/

"I'm Not There" Soundtrack Revealed? Vedder, Jeff Tweedy, Sufjan and Karen O

Wow, just a day after we predicted the soundtrack to the Bob Dylan biopic, "I'm Not There" would likely be a double-disc endeavor, word comes through, that is essentially the case.

Well, at least according to a post on a Pearl Jam forum, that claims the soundtrack is slated for an October 30 release and the 34-track disc will feature Dylan covers performed by Eddie Vedder, Wilco's Jeff Tweedy, Sufjan Stevens, The Yeah, Yeah Yeah's Karen O, Cat Power, Yo La Tengo, Willie Nelson, Iron & Wine, Stephen Malkmus, The Hold Steady and Jack Johnson.

Proof? None other than the aforementioned post, but a publicist for Wilco did confirm to us that Tweedy did in fact record a song for the soundtrack, so this is further likelyhood that this news is true and our favorite inside source confirmed to us that the disc is coming out October 30 on Sony, but also notes that the tracklist is not finalized. A spokesperson for Sub Pop also confirmed that Iron & Wine is on the disc. Plus the cast of characters is not off the mark from what's already been reported (Cat Power, The Hold Steady, Yo La Tengo, Willie Nelson, Stephen Malkmus). Presumably the other 24 tracks (if the aforementioned artists record one cover each) will include previously mentioned "I'm Not There" musical contributors, My Morning Jacket, Sonic Youth, The Frames and many more (though you'll remember we reported that YLT recorded two Dylan songs).

Vedder for one has been busy this summer, he's also recorded a slew of original songs for the Sean Penn film, "Into The Wild," which is due in September. Vedder also has a cameo in Judd Apatow's new fake music biopic, "Walk Hard - The Story of Dewey Cox." More details here.

Actor Ben Wishaw (who played Keith Richards in the lame Brian Jones biopic "Stoned") recently spoke about his lesser-known role as one of the Dylan's to the London Paper. "I play him in about 1965-66 and I’m dressed up like the poet Arthur Rimbaud, who Dylan was reading a lot at that time," Winshaw said. "Every person that plays Bob is another little fragment of his personality or persona – that’s the idea anyway. I was done and dusted in a week so I didn’t really get to meet all of the other Bobs. I’m intrigued as to what the film will be like."

Director Todd Hayne's "I'm Not There" hits theaters in limited release on November 21.
