chances are, upon request for a copy, you would have been informed of the ($5) fee.

here's how, within a few clicks, I learned how much I'd have to pay THE STATE of CALIFORNICATION for a copy of mine (which I DID have to do, a few years back, while not living in California):

you might argue that you are being "forced" into paying $5 unnecessarily, but I still say, you are paying a small cost for the peace of mind in knowing that yr birth certificate is NO LONGER sitting inside some unsecure cabinet, in a school, in the town you were born. I don't know about you, but THAT (more so than $5) would keep me awake at night.
