I've been reading a fair bit about these guys recently, partly because I've been buying from Drone Records, which is run by Stefan Knappe who is / was a part of both.

Does anyone know anything of their output? Is there any one CD out there that it can be said sums up their style in one go?

Isn't it some kind of dark ambient haunting? The Troum project, to be exact.

I'm getting a dark ambient vibe from what I've read, which would suggest it's probably not my cup o' tea, but I'd like to be sure.

Yeah, not very keen on this dark stuff either. Sorry, I'm of no help here.

In my dealings with him, Stefan seems to be a super-nice guy - I like him, hence I want to like his music. He seems far too decent to be getting mixed up in this dark ambient lark.

I have one album's worth of each, and I liked them both a lot.
It's not "dark ambient" in a Cold Meat Industries kind of way; it's just not super-floaty and blissed-out is all. I can't remember the name of the Maeror Tri disc I had, but the Troum 12" I have is called Framapeis/VAR, from 1998.
Very nice stuff. It is "dark," but more in a rumbling meditative kind of way.
Maeror Tri were less droney to my recollection.

I suppose if i think about it, I am a little vague as to what the definition of dark ambient is (as I am with most genre definitions). I think of it as being drone-based music that creates an unsettled feeling. More specifically i think of it as being music that sounds like a cold wet cave with water dripping from the ceiling and an unidentifiable animal sound somewhere deep inside, the producer of which you're pretty sure is going to come and eat you while you sleep.

i just stumbled upon youtube clips of Maeror Tri, which i enjoyed. That's all I can say. This and that I discovered Steinklang Mailorder, who have too much to check out.

I have a double CD of theirs - really cool stuff but I'm hard pressed to remember the title. It had a terrible Stephen O'Malley designed cover that looked like terrible hip hop tagging, but very cool music. Very much in the dark ambient vein.

I also have the Nadja/Troum collaboration that came out last year - Nadja/Adian Baker being a real favorite of mine and knowing how much he admires Troum I was very happy to hear it, definitely an excellent disc. I also think the Nadja/Fear Falls Burning disc was incredible to boot.......
