Or would it be "teens" already?
Whatever. I have been wracking my brain over this, and I can only think of about five albums that really work. Opinions? Missed you assholes |

Women - s/t
Seemed pretty heavy on the old SY influence from what I remember. |

Nisennenmondai - Neji Tori
Magik Markers - Boss Are both pretty heavily influenced by SY I would say. |

TV Ghost are fairly SYish, as are Far Out Fangtooth both in an 80s SY type way, examples:

Hahah! These, along with Source Tags and Codes were my first picks! Except I thought of Public Strain, for some reason, but yeah either one will do. I also threw Deerhoof into the Mix, though I'm not sure which album. I also included Liars in my kick starter list, but again I'm not sure which album I hear some definite SY on drum's not dead, but overall it doesn't really fit. Maybe Sisterworld then. I can't really think of many others artists that come anywhere close to actually sounding like sy. I know almost everyone has been influeced by them in one way r another... Yeah, maybe Magick Markers. Maybe Psychic Paramount. But I want more!!!! You two nailed it though right off the bat. |

There's a Brooklyn band called Grooms who are about to release their third record, they always had a major SY influence as well as Polvo.

Deerhunter are definitely Sonic Youth infouenced whether they've mentioned it or not. Deerhoof as well. And the Oh Sees. Magik Markers, Be Your Own Pet...
Many bands that have Sonic Youth to thank for their general vibe and sound. Some kinda suck, others are quite good. Wavves, Surfer Blood, TV Ghost, Drones, and more well established bands that started out with the promise of being Sonic Youth-like , but failed to really hit the mark in terms of cultural significance, like Blonde Redhead. I think Broken Social Scene had a good deal of SY energy, especially on Forgiveness Rock Record. And of course Unwound. And some other stuff. But unfortunately, the generation in question did produce a band that can claim to be the Sonic Youth of the 00s. Sonic youth was the Sonic Youth of the 00s. But I'd agree that Cryptograms and LTIY and Source Tags and Codes are the albums that sound the most like Sonic Youth. Of those bands, one has become a massive caricature of themselves, another has broken up, and Deerhunter, though awesome, is taking a different musical track; one that currently has them sounding a good deal less like Sonic Youth than they originally did. |
