back before Nirvana's Unplugged performance was actually released as an album, I remember taping it on to VHS from MTV, then running the VCR into a tape deck and recording it onto cassette. It sounded like the hiss of a Bee Thousand x Sentridoh, but it was cool back then.
Anyway, I'm getting over a cold and just starting to feel better so I think my brain is just hyper w/ activity from a week of fucking atrophy right now. I was thinking about how I have a lot concert films on DVD that it would probably be really easy to just convert to audio files to make into semi-official live albums. The truth is that I don't WATCH these concert films as often as I listen to music. And I listen to the majority of my music in the car anyway. I mean, I've legit thought about getting one of those smart car stereo systems that has a DVD player, just for the option of listening to live concert movies haha. So I don't know. It's kind of a silly thread I guess. But it's also Friday. So let's talk. Does anyone else do this? What software is suggested for easily doing this?

I would try to find it on Soulseek or some torrent sites. I don't think I've ever ripped audio from a DVD myself

If you can get the DVD files into a format that's not an Image file for dvd reproduction... but are actually media files you can watch on the computer... then there are a heap of file converter programs and apps that could turn it into an MP3 or WAV.
The rudimentary solution is to run a 3.5 mm cable from the headphone jack (in stereo) to the mic input of the computer... then record the whole thing into GarageBand or similar programs. It's crude, but actually gives you a chance to do a bit of mastering for yourself on GarageBand. I've done that with a lot of super dry off-the-desk bootlegs... add touches of reverb, kill off the nasty higher end, compression, whatever. |

yeah I guess if I have to rip the DVD to like an mp4 and then convert that to mp3 then that'd make sense.
3.5mm route is more work than I'm looking for haha.

It's not all that difficult. Play the dvd while running a 1/8" from the headphone jack or audio out connections of your dvd player or tv to the audio in on your computer sound card. Any recording software running can grab the audio. Alternatively, you can run into just about any recorders input : m10, zoom 1, r7 etc.
Yeah edit to say, "what Kuhb said". ....... |

yeah but doing that I'd also have to then make Track splits manually as well. I'm hoping there's something that could actually just make each DVD chapter (generally, a single song on a concert DVD) into its own mp3 track automatically.

It's a lot of work but that's part of the charm in a way... plus I enjoy the editing/mastering part.
Honestly if you want minimum hassle check Soulseek. There's a good chance someone's already done it for you |

Just search for some dvd ripping software that can demux the different streams according to the chapters' cuts. Back in the days I used DVD Decrypter
DVDDecrypter - IFO Mode Tools - Settings - IFO Mode - File splitting BY CHAPTER disclaimer: I haven't done anything with dvds in forever, that's the workflow I just found randomly searching to make sure dvd decrypter divides by chapter as I recall.. since the technology behind DVDs is quite "ancient" I guess even old software like that can do the trick. You'll have to encode the audio to your listening format of choice, but that's an easy task.

Listen, TINY, what you need is DVD Audio Extractor:
http://www.dvdae.com/dvdae/ Does your player support WAV and/or FLAC files? If not, do you have a CD player in your car? I ask because the audio on a regular DVD is already lossy, so why would you wanna compress that into mp3s? Better extract shit as WAVs and make yourself some nice compact discs. Just sayin'.

This thread is cool, I've wanted to extract some for a while.
I tried VLC once, it didn't work unfortunately. I also tried to use Audacity and record the speaker output, but it sounded awful and I had Discord notifications popping up every so often |
