Alternative to Word?

something stupid just happened to my computer and all microsoft office got wiped out; i don't have the office suit installation discs and i was wondering if you know of any other programs/applications i could use to open and work with .doc files. word is really the only thing in office i use, and i use it a lot so your help would be greatly appreciated.

Abiword is a word processor that you can download for free if you need something a bit better than wordpad.

A typewriter, never crashes just sometimes the keys jam.

Openoffice is excellent. I use it on my linux system
