Signal to Noise: The Journal of Improvised & Experimental Music - $4.95
The quarterly journal of improvised & experimental music, documenting the confluence of avant-garde jazz, electro-acoustics and experimental, modern rock http://www.signaltonoisemagazine.org/ I came across this magazine at my local 'zine shop; didn't know there was such a thing. Some of the headlines WAYS OF HEARING - Muhal Richard Abrams, Roscoe Mitchell and George Lewis reunite for a new album of organized sound THE DARK BLUES - Guitar-slinging improvisors Tetuzi Akiyama, Keiji Haino and Loren Connors put a new spin on the blues POSTCARDS FROM THE EDGE - The Edgetown New Music Summit spotlights an array of Californian improvisors and sound artists loosely aligned within the rosters of the Edgetone, Accretions and Circumvention record labels PLAYING THE WALL - In May, Glenn Weyant turned the US/Mexican border fence into an electro-acoustic instrument. This is his first account. |

Decent mag. Overlaps much with Wire and Arthur in scope of coverage, and it's a bit boring compared to those two, but I will continue to pick it up as there's still too few print journals covering anything of the kind.

I check it out sometimes at the bookstore alongside looking through Art in America and Art News.

i think signal to noise actually has the wire beat in terms of content these days. i'm hardly ever interested enough in what they're covering to dish out 8 dollars for a copy. signal to noise, on the other hand, i never pass up. of course if i paid uk prices for the wire i might be singing a different tune.

I do hear you on the dollar value thing with the Wire. Accompanying CD comps help make up for that somewhat, but really, the musical scope of all these mags (and really, who can beat the dollar value of a free Arthur mag?) leaves a lot to be desired as far as I'm concerned. These mags hardly loosen their collar enough to write about anything that's actually "fun" or slightly "low-brow." It's a big reason contributing to why I started my own blog......besides a few other bloggers and Blastitude.com, it's like no one's covering this stuff!
