I'm considering buying one (seems to be the one kim uses during the goo period). Are they any good?

the one kim played back then was an eighties/late seventies(??) one, current/modern BC basses really do sound like shit..to me anyway, it's more show than sound, kind of dull sounding pickups, missing a lot of punch/bite, maybe i'm biased as a p-bass fan...
try to find a vintage one, but even if it sounds good, it'll still look damn ugly. |

that one is/was SO ugly. cringe when i see it. i dig her rickenbacker, thunderbird, and gibsons for visual aesthetics. nothing wrong w/ a p-bass either. as for sound, i'm not one to ask.

not a fan of BC Rich myself. When I picked up a warlock it felt like a toy, and when I played it it played like a toy. I wouldn't know what to say about the bass, but as far as I know they're a cheap make.
You should check out ESP guitars, they're the brand that BC Rich was based off of. I really like em myself.

On the Corporate Ghost DVD, Kim mentioned that the bass sounded terrible. She only bought it because it was 'very L.A' or something.

I bought a BC Rich Warlock guitar when i was a bit younger. BC Rich's are attractive, but when you get them home after awhile you realise how limiting they are. Very few people in my exprience have been overly glowing about the brand in general. It all depends on what sound you want i suppose. I love Fenders personally (yes I am a boring fuck). Kim used to play a Fender Bass I believe

mustang's a shortscaler, like the gibson eb, i prefer shortscales when it comes to guitar but when it's bass i miss that extra thump/oomph you get from a regular scale bass, i love the mustang silhouet though, same for the sg-like eb, but the sound...i don't know..it just depends on what you prefer/need in a band situation...they sound cool (i actually like the gibson eb better than the mustang bass) but just try them out when you see them somewhere at a store, try as many as you can before you buy, haha...that sounds 'wrong' doesn't it ?

they smack slightly of the 80s-era pointy headstock shredder guitars. not to jump on the bandwagon, but they do sound shitty. you can't really go wrong with a rickenbacker bass.

Used to have an old Fender Musicmaster, which is very similar to a Mustang. Kim plays one exactly like it in the Bull In The Heather video, actually. I couldn't get into it - I don't really like short scale basses, but I like shortscale guitars. The strings were too floppy with less tension on a shorter neck. Played my roommate's new SG Bass (why did they drop the EB name and rotary pickup selector? lame..) at a party without really using it before and man it was hard to play - used to bashing strings with a lot of tension. Granted, short scale basses are excellent for beginners for the very reason I don't play them.

I generally like the bass sound of a band who use Rickenbacker.
Rickenbacker 12 string guitars are nice.

I have heard some incredible Ric bass tones. Chris Squier from Yes in particular...just couldn't get that sound. Was gonna swap out the pickups, but I didn't wanna fuck with it since it was really old. The first time I recorded in a real studio was with that bass, and the producer hated it...it just had no oommph to it. Every bass I've owned ever since (besides the musicmaster) has surpassed it.
I remember when I got that Ric, they were so common finding them used in the mid 90's, now they are a bit more scarce. Got it for $500 at a crappy Music Go Round that had 3 other ones, so I got to take my pick. |

I didn't ever care much for P Basses either, kind of plain and common, but I got one for a good deal with a trade in, and it has become my favorite bass - so simple and solid. I love it for recording!
