some others:
Hum ripps off the smashing pumpkins (just listen to the song 'stars' and try not to think of 'drown')

Mogwai wishes they were Slint, Explosions in the Sky wishes they were Mogwai. (I don't really like Mogwai or EITS)

Grandaddy ripps off Pavement (but in such a lovely way, totally excused)

Band of Horses singer sounds like The Shins singer (two different bands though I guess)

Bastro borrowed very heavily from Big Black.
Hurricane #1 were essentially a carbon copy of Oasis, complete with idiot mouthy singer and Noel Gallagher-obsessed songwriter.

Hum wasn't a rip off band. "Stars" does sound like The Smashing Pumpkins, but the rest of their stuff was totally creative. Plus, they have the whole space-rock vibe that the Pumpkins never had.

fluxequalsrad - on the Fall tip, start off with something like "Grotesque", and then pick up "Hex Enduction Hour" if you like that. The Fall back catalogue is huge, but to me at least, you can't go wrong with the early stuff.

I used to be a metal junky and never thought that relative ash sounded at all like the deftones. Relative ash is much more metal and harder than anyhin i've heard from the deftones. The singing is very different as well.

it seems like most people are naming bands that are similar and the bands that cashe din on pervious bands successes.

I can't recall properly, but a member of Sonic Youth could have been annoyed by a fellow band when they were on Blast First, the name being A.C. Temple. The only song I heard is Sheikh on Nothing Short of Total War, and as it sounds like mid-eighties Sonic Youth without the menace, I tend to be sceptical.

The gleeful Herman Düne is 100% Jonathan Richman.

yeah, I dont reckon hum sound like SP. Plus, pre stars hum is way greater than post stars hum. Also mogwai pretty much sound nothing like slint - totally different! Maybe their early stuff sounds a bit like them, but definately not their newer stuff.

if you want bands that sound like other bands then move to leeds. apart from the odd (and good) exeption the place is bereft of original thought and an emulation of certain 'key' bands as they are seen. legends in their own postcode.

What?
I don't think they are that similar. Also, Herman Dune and David Ivar solo are quite different and better, in my opinion.

The original Courtney:

Courtney Love-The Second Most
Beautiful Girl In the World
mp3

K Records EP, 1990

Lois Maffeo is a national treasure, and the three 7"s she made with Patrick Maley (drummer and YoYo Studio guy) under the name Courtney Love (two on K, One on Feel Good All Over) are all to be prized. (Someone really ought to round them up on a CD.) Her peculiar haunting melodic sense and beautiful wordplay have touched us many times, but this song is probably our favorite.

No relation to that other Courtney Love, that one whose band sounded like Sonic Youth until grunge took over and she realized she'd hopped on the wrong carousel. The one who represented the very apex of alternarock self-absorption with "Doll Parts." The one who sold millions of records and landed a spot on Spin's "Top 100 Alternative Albums" list. The one who was so traumatized by the death of her husband that she no longer appears to be able to write songs. The one who at present amounts to nothing except a punchline of a joke that is now more pathetic than funny.
