So I'm visiting Beijing & Tokyo in July -- is anyone familiar with either of those cities? How do I plug into the music scenes there? Any advice?

sweet man, i have been to beijing and its cool. dont know about the music scene though, i was at the tokyo airport on the way there and that was fun. they have alot of porn that you can just look at at the airport, even if you are a youngin

if you can make it there i much prefer the osaka/kyoto/kobe (kansai) region to tokyo. kansai has a much more lively music scene and local culture (in my very humble opinion)

I take it you mean it's 80p for a beer in China? It's damn in expensive in Japan as far as I know. Everywhere in eastern europe it's about that price for a pint....but beware...anywhere with beer that cheap means scores of pissed up brits!!

I was in Beijing in summer of 2000.

it was damn great, cheap food and accomodation and very friendly people everywhere you look. anyway, I don't think there's much going on musically there.

word. i'm Chinese. Chinese-American. Why does Beijing not having an internationally visible music scene? Is the government there afraid their kids will have spiky hair and not do their homework? Why is Beijing way secluded and far from thought when it comes to US and European bands touring? How come nobody wants to set up a music market in China as well? Is it because of my parents generation who are completely insane because of going through the cultural revolution? Why do they put people in jails for being poets in China? How come my grandparents who are well off financially in their courtyard apartments in Beijing so anal retentive and not sweet and mild manngered like normal grandparents? Why is the death penalty so common in China? How come when I sometimes visit my grandparents in Beijing there is nothing to do in terms of going to shows because the government is run by dictators and crack down on every single rock and roll band because it is deemed obscene? Why is music dead in Beijing?

nothing that i know of over golden week. im trying not to look cuz im broke. theres melt banana on the 27th. and a band called midori that i saw a while back with afrirampo who were pretty good, they play in the 17th and 29th.
i gotta shed out 4000 or something for my v∞redoms ticket. if you didnt know about that, check the liquidroom website(its not there but theyre doing the tix) sorry i dont have time to post links now.
also, if your into it theres cosmos (ami yoshida and sachiko m) on the 24th. always wanted to see them for some reason, dont know why cuz i bought ami yoshidas cd and didnt like it at all, and saw sachiko m twice and didnt like that either, but ill probly go anyways.
