I ripped this idea off of another thread.
Basically it's like a cup knockout involving each of the 16 Sonic Youth studio albums (no whitey Album, live albums or SYRs, although the first SY EP is included) Each album has been assigned a number: 01 - Sonic Youth 02 - Confusion is Sex 03 - Bad Moon Rising 04 - EVOL 05 - Sister 06 - DDN 07 - Goo 08 - Dirty 09 - EJSTNS 10 - Washing Machine 11 - A Thousand Leaves 12 - NYCGYF 13 - Murray Street 14 - Sonic Nurse 15 - Rather Ripped 16 - The Eternal Albums will go against another album by a random selection (chosen via the random number generator at Random.org) and you will vote according to which album you want to win that tie. The winner will then progress to the next round when it will face another previous tie winner, and so on until there's an eventual winner. Each round will last a week, with the fixtures for the next round being announced on a sunday until the final. It'll make a lot more sense when it's being done. The important thing is that, unlike the Survivor Thread, you vote for who you want to win. I've kept this thread seperate from the actual threads for each round, just because. Each tie will be given it's own thread, with it's own poll. |

I should say, if there's a tie after the 7 days, I have the right to give it to the album that received the most positive comments in the thread. Although offers of money will also be taken into consideration.

yeah, working out the first bunch was actually a lot more difficult than I thought. With the number of albums decreasing as it goes along though, it should be a bit easier. Hopefully.

I thought these people got it right:
http://forums.nickcaveandthebadseeds...ic.php?t=23291 And the final results... http://forums.nickcaveandthebadseeds...ic.php?t=23789 A bit less random and more fair, I guess. |

yeah, that works but the point was to make it sort of random, in the same way that a sports knockout tournament is sort of random. It won't determine what the best overall SY album, but it's interesting having to make choices between albums that we mightn't necessarily ordinarily compare, like CIS and Dirty. I mean I can't think of two more different SY albums than those and they're virtually neck and neck.

So, results from first round:
Sonic Youth (EP) beat Rather Ripped by 61 to 36 votes Daydream Nation comfortably beat Sonic Nurse by 88 to 30 votes Confusion is Sex just about beat Dirty by 62 to 58 votes Sister absolutely thrashed Goo by 93 to 22 votes Bad Moon Rising comfortably beat NYCG&F by 72 to 35 votes EVOL comfortably beat A Thousand Leaves by 76 to 36 votes Washing Machine beat The Eternal by 84 to 45 votes Murray Street absolutely trounced EJSTNS by 87 to 28 votes So albums going through to round two are: Sonic Youth (EP); Murray Street; Washing Machine; EVOL; Bad Moon Rising; Sister; Confusion is Sex; Daydream Nation. The ties for round two will be posted soon in four threads with polls that will finish this time next week. Just to say, as some people seem to be thinking, I don't choose which albums go against which, they're picked by giving each album a number and using a random number generator on Random.org. |

So, results for Round Two:
Evol beat Bad Moon Rising fairly convincingly in the end, by 68 to 41 votes. Confusion is Sex only just managed to scrape past Washing Machine with 61 votes to 59 Sister completely thrashed the Sonic Youth EP by something ridiculous like 97 votes to 11 Daydream Nation hardly struggled against Murray Street in a convincing 80 to 31 win. So yeah, a final four made up entirely of pre-Geffen releases. Anyway, same deal for the semi finals: the polls are open for a week and you vote for who you want to win. The ties themselves will follow shortly in their own threads. |

This is suddenly not very interesting. It's DDN vs Sister final with DDN taking the cup, surely?

Sister vs. DDN final.
Never would have guessed. EVOL vs. CIS would have been a lot more interesting...
