Anyone know one? I volunteered to make my little sister's birthday cake, and she requested a 3-layer chocolate cake with pink butter cream frosting and cherries on top.

I've never made a chocolate cake from scratch, (though I've made other styles) and I've been told you must be careful in picking a chocolate cake recipe because they can often be too dry or bitter.

Why don't you just buy one from a supermarket and pretend you made it?

that sounds so cute..

as long as you have enough oils/fats in the cake it will not be too dry. bitter doesn't bother me personally but if she is little it probably will.. just don't put too much cocoa, and all the icing would probably cancel it out anyways. Are you putting cream/jam in the layers or just more frosting?

I remember I used to have a chocolate/lemonade cake recipe that was always really popular with kids/those who are sugar loving. I'll have a look for it if you like.

how old is she?

i have a chocolate cake recipe from my now deceased great aunt. it's pretty fucking good and i've made it several times over the years. unfortunately i don't know where it is at the moment but i can tell you this: it was made with cooking oil (i do wonder how it would taste with, say walnut or hazelnut oil).

but anyway, my best recommendation would be this-- go to any old bookstore and find yourself an old edition of THE JOY OF COOKING. preferrably pre-70s-- the updated versions are full of fat-free calvinistic shit. then find a suitable recipe and go for the kill. i could, actually, scan or photograph my own dilapidated book, but owning your own copy will serve you well in years to come. that book has instructions on how to prepare absolutely everything that can be eaten, from lamb sweetbreads to squirrels to quail eggs. enjoy.

ps- i like to eat a dark chocolate cake with a nice glass of good hoppy beer. the bitter cuts the excess sweet and it's pure fucking delight.

Yeah, I should get Joy of Cooking. Really surprised my Mom doesn't have it, according to her Julia Childs is awesome.
