I met him once shortly after 9/11 occurred, he was supposed to do a a duo set with Kim but it ended up being with Jim O'Rourke... talked to him briefly after his set outside, it was a very brief as he was then ushered in to do some sort of college paper interview er something of the sort... i didn't get the impression at all that he was a jerk or egotistical he was rather approachable despite some very young girl maybe 17 or 18 whole was "gaga" and star struck by him and ran up and kissed him on the cheek... rather ridiculus and inbetween all of that another kid around the same age urged him to sign his washing machine t-shirt... so i guess thurston is often in a compromised situation, can't imagine always being personable with the chance of those type of situations arising.

I've met Thurston about three times, and he was always very nice. If I were in his shoes, I think I'd get tired of being approached by people.

you know, if you don't want random people approaching you in public all the time, maybe you should flip burgers or something instead of being famous.

I met him back in '04 and he was a sweetheart. Nicest reasonably popular musician I've ever encountered.

He's described gigs his band has played at where half the audience are balding fat middle-aged suburbanites there only to ask for autographs on covers of records they listened to in their 20s.

however, i believe that everyday people should behave normally and respectfully during encounters with celebrities/musicians/whatever because, after all, they're just everyday people who happened to do something important enough to get famous. you'd be surprised at how much nicer they are when you act casually rather than like a star-struck thirteen year old.

It's easier getting blowjobs from star-struck thirteen year olds than ones that are all casual with you.

I once had the pleasure of meeting Fred Durst and he was cool. My daughter loved his music and stayed out for a couple of nights for tickets at a free worcester gig. I bumped into him getting off a bus started talking to him took him over and introduced him to my daughter who was like 4th in line. She was only 15 at the time so I had to keep checking up on her bring her drinks and food. Fred was cool though him and I kept talking until that bitch Mistress Carrie started whining to him about some radio station Pictures. oh well

(Yes, I could have changed the channel - in fact, I did, but came back because the Springsteen set with Sam Moore, Fogerty and Darlene Love was great.)

Oh, come off it. Thurston is totally a rock star, he revels in it and has fun with it, and anyone who hasn't figured that out since like 1986 at least, really hasn't been watching. It doesn't take hits to be a rock star, it takes attitude and a following. There's nothing wrong with it either, and Thurston while a complete smart ass on stage and in interviews is an incredibly approachable person to his fans. So are the rest of Sonic Youth (approachable, he seems like the token smart ass, though I've heard Lee pull a couple great one-liners in interviews many years ago) , probably because the whole famous thing to them is mostly a hoot and occasionally maybe mildly annoying. |

I Hey Jim'd Jim once in a bodega before a show, and he reacted like a deer in headlights. I only said anything because we made eye contact and there was obvious recognition. I've seen Thurston around a ton of times, at various shows and in public, and Steve once or twice in public too. I never said anything to them because what was I going to say? Some trite shit just for the sake of saying something?
I'm pretty certain that the only time I've said anything to any 'celebrities' is when they've initiated conversation with me.
