It looks like a cross between the (paul stanley) ibanez iceman and a rickenbacker 4001...to me.

hey, cool! thanks! so they were made by vantage? my buddy has a Quest bass (which is the only way i ever identified the one SY used) and we've always wondered about its origin...

I guess. Almost nothing is known about Quest. They're easily one of the most obscure Japanese brands of the early to mid 80s (awesome time for Japanese guitars-Westone, Electra, Aria Pro II...).
