Haven't looked, but does it read "produced by", or "recorded by"? I'm actually surprised he'd put his name on such a piece of crap at all, but then I feel that way about everyone involved. I'm sure the money was good.

albini is give or take. its just as easy to love him as it is to hate em. hes worked on some stuff that is utterly amazing (in utero comes to mind, that f-minus album wasnt bad for what it was either) but hes also worked on some shit that just sucked, not to mention some artists that are less than...anything worthwhile (bush..heh).

i like em...i like his music (esp shellac...yeah, even more than big black and rape man).

hes just odd.

its really not all that expensive to get him to record an album/...i cant remember how much exactly, but im pretty sure its somewhere around the ballpark of like 1200 bux.

im sure the stooges paid em alot more though.

In Utero technically is not "produced" by him since it just reads "recorded by". Still, that's just the credit, and the sound is so much better than the rest of their output, that I'm sure it's him. He just didn't tell them how to write the songs or bring in a pedal steel guitar player or the like. But then somebody procured a cellist, so who knows.

Albini claimed years ago that he charges proportionate to how much he likes the band. Nonetheless he got $100,000 for In Utero, and I'm sure he got something similar from the Stooges fiasco. At least back in the In Utero days he refused to take a royalties percentage as he's morally opposed to it.

Shellac is my favorite thing he's done musically too. I've seen both Shellac and Big Black and while both were great, the newer band really is superior in my book. Just more range overall, plus the other guys are every bit as talented as he is.

It was called Slapping Pythagoras I think. Didn't know that Albini recorded it. Interesting.

space streakings - 7 toku
jawbreaker - 24 hour revenge therapy
shellac - at action park
the ghost - this is a hospital
godspeed - yanqui xo
helmet - strap it on
breeders - pod
fred from b-52's solo album
melt banana - scratch or stitch

The albums he produces, records or whatever you wanna call it, still sound like momentus taking place. He has an ability tyo make songs sound gritty like no other. Is he an arsehole? Who cares? Only people who still live with their parents really do.

helmet - strap it on

I really love the way Strap it On sounds, but it was recorded by Wharton Tiers, not Albini.

In my opinion At Action Park has some of his finest recording work. I like the way PJ Harvey's Rid of Me sounds compared to her other work, as opposed bands who keep going back to Albini for every new album. A little less Albini wouldn't have hurt The Jesus Lizard for instance. And although I think Starters Alternators and Turn are two of the best sounding albums by The EX, after having Albini three times in a row it'd be nice if they picked someone else for their next one.

As far as i know he doesn't recieve royalties for any recording / mixing session. He just charges a daily fee, but it is possible to get more when his is not recording at his studio.
